Job Summary
We are seeking a dedicated and experienced School Nurse to join our team, supporting multiple school districts and sites. Requirements / Qualifications
Education and Experience:
A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college
Current cardiopulmonary resuscitation and have knowledge and experience in advanced first aid principles.
Classroom experience instructing children and adults.
One year experience in school or community health.
Certificates & Licenses:
Must possess a valid California driver’s license
Current California Registered Nurse license
Possession of or eligible for a California credential with an authorization as school nurse
Must possess a valid Public Health Nurse certificate.
Must possess a valid Audiometric certificate.

Job Summary
Under the direction of the County Superintendent and under the general supervision of
the Coordinator of School Health Services, and under direct supervision of
administrator, provide specialized assistance in the County health services program for
students, including those developmentally delayed; participate in the assessment and
placement of special education students; monitor and train staff in specialized health
care procedures and provide health services to students.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities includes but not limited to:
1. Provide specialized assistance in the County health services program for
students; prepare and participate in the assessment of the health and
developmental status of students; participate in the development of the
Individualized Education Plan (IEP) for students as assigned; Conduct physical
examinations to assess students’ physical condition and health in such areas as
hearing, vision, scoliosis screenings and other conditions;
2. Examine students for illness, injury and medical emergency; administer first aid
as necessary; document and report unusual or critical cases to appropriate
authorities;
3. Monitor and train staff in specialized health care procedures; teach a variety of
health related topics on a one-to-one or group basis; serve as a consultant on
health related topics;
4. Provide health information and services to students regarding such issues as
medications and health care procedures; provide information in person or on the
telephone to school site personnel with the County; communicate with students,
staff, families, caregivers, and health care providers;
5. Participate as a member of IEP teams; provide input to IEP’s; observe and
assess student progress; prepare reports as necessary;
6. Design and implement an Individualized School Health Plan, Emergency Care
Plan, Individual Education Plan and/or Section 504 Plan related to health care
needs or chronic illnesses;
7. Determine the appropriate level of care for students with specialized health care
needs or chronic illnesses; interpret assessments and medical information to
provide direction to school staff working with the students;
8. Process paperwork to assure students receive necessary examinations and
follow up care; prepare and maintain various health and other related files,
records, and reports according to established procedures; assure compliance
with State and Federal mandates related to health care;
9. Train, monitor, supervise and responsible for licensed and unlicensed staff
delivering routine medications, health care procedures and emergency protocols;
10.Provide school nurse case management services for students;
11.Counsel students and parents regarding health or school related issues and
provide information and referral to community services;
12.Provide in-service training to County personnel regarding communicable
diseases and other health concerns; serve on various school committees and
attend meetings as assigned;

13.Assist in delivery of comprehensive health education to students;
14.Uses professional skills, nursing judgment and leadership ability to create a safe
and healthy school environment that supports the well-being, academic success
and life-long achievement of students;
15.Perform federal and state mandated tasks including but not limited to emergency
care; child abuse reporting; communicable disease control, prevention and follow
up; and CHDP, audiometric, scoliosis and vision screening;
16.Perform routine and emergency direct healthcare services and provide referrals;
17.Maintain, protect and manage confidential electronic, spoken and written student
health records and information;
18.Maintain records for reimbursement and billing to Medi-Cal;
19.Audit for compliance with Child Health and Disability Program (CHPD) and
immunization requirements;
20.Operate a variety of specialized health service equipment, such as stethoscope,
thermometer, scoliometer, and otoscope;
21.Operate standard office equipment, such as computer, copy machine, and
facsimile;
22.May participate in a variety of meetings, including Student Study Team meetings;
23.Maintains positive working relationships with those in the course of work;
24.Complies with the rules and regulations set forth in the California Education
Code; Title V; Procedures and Policies of the Nevada County Office of
Education; and policies and procedures of the local district(s) as assigned;
25.Requisition, stock and inventory medical, first aid and office supplies as
necessary;
26.Perform related duties as assigned.
Desirable Qualifications
Knowledge of:
Child development, common childhood health care agencies and resources, public
school operations and materials, and methods of health education;
Current health care practices, medication effects and proper administration
procedures;
Proper operation of specialized health assessment instruments;
Modern medical terminology, equipment and techniques;
Diagnostic methods for medical conditions and diseases;
Accepted testing techniques for hearing, vision and scoliosis and other screenings;
Accepted methods and principles of personal hygiene;
Genetic and environmental disorders which effect cognitive, motor, visual, and
auditory development;
IEP requirements;
Administration, analysis, and interpretation of a variety of assessment measures.
Ability to:
Work with minimal supervision and to adapt to a variety of settings;
Perform health care services in emergency situations;
Counsel and teach pupils, teachers, staff and parents regarding health needs and
functions;

Analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action during routine

Perform technical duties related to assigned components of the IEP program;
Prepare and deliver oral presentations regarding health and safety issues and
communicable diseases;
Identify various health needs, and unusual and critical cases;
Effectively plan and organize work;
Establish and maintain files, records, reports and referrals;
Serve as a positive, contributing member of an educational team;
Display interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy;
Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Working Conditions
Environment:
Indoor office, classroom, home or community playgroup environment, and involves
continuous contact with students, staff and representatives of other agencies.
