This position is governed by state and federal laws, applicable state and national codes and standards, and agency/institution policy.FunctionsChecks design, blueprints, and engineer's calculations for code compliance and use of code approved materials. Conducts inspections at construction sites to ensure code compliance and notes any items for corrective action by contractors. Prepares inspection reports and issues/denies operating permits. Conducts routine annual and/or semi-annual inspections and verifies that all operating controls and required safety devices are in place and in good working order and that a licensed operator is on duty if required. Approves or disapproves license renewals and recommends necessary repairs and/or corrections. Prepares written reports of all inspections performed, listing any defects, code violations, or unsafe conditions. Investigates complaints of equipment performance, accidents, or possible unsafe conditions and documents findings. Performs other duties as assigned.DimensionsFrequent travel within an assigned area and exposure to weather elements and construction sites is required. Occasional climbing of ladders and or stairs at construction sites is required.Knowledge, Skills and AbilitiesKnowledge of state and federal health and safety laws and regulations. Knowledge of applicable American National Standards Institute (ANSI) codes and standards. Ability to conduct on-site inspections and investigations to ensure compliance with all applicable codes and standards. Ability to review reports for accuracy and completeness. Ability to investigate complaints of equipment performance or unsafe conditions, document findings and recommend corrective action. Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with others.Minimum QualificationsThe formal educational equivalent of a high school diploma; completion of a journeyman's program in selected area; plus three years of experience in safety inspections and investigations. Additional requirements determined by the agency for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Office of Personnel Management.
