Job Description

Facilities Development and Management, Grounds Services, seeks a Groundskeeper Specialist (Mapping Technician) to field locate and digitally map landscape features and assets that would include but not be limited to turf areas, planting beds, trees, irrigation controllers, components, main lines, and hydrozones, and outdoor furnishings.

Salary Range

Essential Duties

Digitally map Grounds Services assets using Google Earth and/or ArcGIS.

Operate irrigation controllers to identify hydrozones.

Create and populate spreadsheets with acquired data.

Field locate, identify, log data, and map ASU tree inventory.

Keep existing maps up to date as landscape areas, assets, and inventories evolve.

Identify and report any landscape issues noticed while performing mapping surveys.

Assist irrigation team with “wet checks” and problem flagging, when necessary.

Prepare special reports, maps, and/or spreadsheets as requested by Management.

Mapping services may be required at other ASU campuses.

May conduct quality control surveys as requested by Management.

Days and Schedule: Monday - Friday; 5:00 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.

Minimum Qualifications

Two (2) years of grounds maintenance experience, OR, Associate Degree in Horticulture or related field e.g. Golf Course Management, Sports Turf Management, Landscape Construction; OR, Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved; AND possess and maintain One (1) Grounds certification or equivalent e.g. Arizona Pest Application License, Certified Arborist from International Society of Arboriculture, Certified Grounds Technician from PGMS, Passed Desert Landscaper School from the Phoenix Desert Botanical Garden. Employee may be required to possess a valid US Driver’s license of the appropriate class and required endorsements throughout employment.

Desired Qualifications

Two (2) years of digital mapping experience utilizing Google Earth and/or ArcGIS.

One (1) year of experience operating various brands of irrigation controllers.

Demonstrated knowledge of:

Microsoft Office software

Laptop and iPad functionality

Local tree species and characteristics

Irrigation systems and components

Evidence of effective communication skills.

Working Environment

Activities regularly require long periods of exposure to external elements indigenous to a desert environment, weather, potential exposure to venomous insects, insecticides, herbicides and fertilizers. Regularly extended periods of walking over uneven and occasionally rocky surfaces, stooping, bending, reaching, lifting and pushing objects of varying weights up to 20 pounds. Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse. Required to stand/sit for varying lengths of time and travel moderate distances to perform work. Regular use of standard office equipment including, but not limited to: computer workstation/laptop (keyboard, monitor, mouse), printer, fax, calculator, copier, telephone and associated computer/technology peripherals.

May be exposed to hazardous and dangerous materials, tools, and equipment which will require safety precautions and/or specific process to be followed, and may include the use of Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) (e.g. safety glasses, hearing protection, negative pressure and positive pressure respirator). Use of PPE may require medical clearance prior to use.

Facilities Development and Management at ASU employment requires current eligibility to legally work in the United States.

This position is located at the University Services Building, 1551 S. Rural Road, Tempe, AZ (on Rural Road south of Apache Blvd).

Must possess a valid Arizona driver's license (minimum of Class D) upon employment and maintain throughout employment. Post-offer of employment, selected candidate must possess an acceptable driving record which is 5 or fewer points in the most recent 39-month period from date of hire.

Must pass pre-employment audiogram exam post offer of employment.

This position may be called in for emergency response including nights, weekends, and holidays.
