Title of Position: Transportation/Civil Engineer Resource Assistant

Position Details

Stewards Individual Placement Program (Stewards) provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting ecosystem health. Stewards in partnership with the Tonto National Forest are seeking a Resource Assistant who will survey and inspect National Forest System roads and road features and assist with transportation engineering construction projects to promote public health and safety, improve the Tonto National Forest transportation system, mitigate potential risks of erosion and flooding to at risk ecosystems, and reduce sedimentation in drainage systems, other ground surfaces, and bodies of water.

Position Responsibilities will include:

Road Condition Surveys

Performs field condition surveys of National Forest System roads to support the health, safety, and effective performance of the Tonto National Forest transportation system.

Follows established Forest Service survey and data collection protocols.

Road Sign Surveys

Conducts sign condition surveys along National Forest System roads that have been prioritized for sign replacement.

Follows established Forest Service survey and data collection protocols.

Transportation Project Monitoring

Assists with transportation project site visits and inspections.

Gathers data used to monitor progress of contractors or field crews in achieving contract requirements and complying with project specifications.

Follows established Forest Service inspection and data collection protocols.

Data Management

Downloads data from Avenza Pro mobile application and other electronic devices

Performs data entry into the engineering system of record or other applicable databases, and corrects or updates any errors.

Minimum Requirements:

Certificate or degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or a similar field that equips applicants with the knowledge of basic methods, techniques, and procedures to conduct engineering analyses, surveys, and inspections.

Ability to evaluate roads and road features for potential safety and performance deficiencies.

Ability to use Microsoft applications and Adobe Acrobat software to generate inspection reports, perform calculations, and manage/organize data.

Ability to follow established survey and data collection protocols and maintain accurate records with minimal data entry errors.

Strong organization and communication skills - ability to work independently and with others to accomplish project objectives within established timeframes. Communicates progress and concerns to supervisor and is able to provide effective written and oral information exchange.

Follows all Forest Service safety requirements including check-in and check-out procedures during fieldwork. Comfortable working in Arizona summer heat.

Driver’s License and ability to pass MVR through Conservation Legacy (must be over 21 years old or have had license for 3 years)

Possesses a good driving record and the ability to drive a four-wheel drive on difficult roads.

Ability to get along well with others.

Enthusiasm for working in the outdoors and sharing with others.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience working with GIS software - accessing data, creating layers, importing/exporting data, conducting geo-spatial analyses, and producing maps.

Technical proficiencies in data collection methods, including using digital tablets or other electronic devices.

Benefits:

Living Allowance: $12.50/hour (pre-tax)

$1000/month housing allowance (pre-tax)

$50/monthly commuting reimbursement. (pre-tax)

$2750.00 Professional Development and Training fund.

Eligible for health care after 60 days.
