ADF&G Technician Position

Alaska, Southeast alaska, 99801 Southeast alaska USA

Vacancy caducado!

Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) is hiring one short-term non-permanent position for a summer 2022 field project. The project will occur over 5-6 weeks on the Forrester Island Complex removing approximately 15,000lbs of marine debris as well as collecting biological samples deposited by Steller sea lions and Cassin’s auklets. All crew members will be living in a small, rustic cabin with minimal accommodations, including no internet/cell service or running water.

Required Skills:

- Multiple field seasons maneuvering and driving small skiffs (12-18ft). We work in small rocky corridors with big swells and around many animals. Being a competent skiff driver is a must.

- Experience living in rustic conditions in close proximity with other people. We will be on-island together for 5-6 weeks. Being able to effectively and kindly communicate to others is essential.

- Passion for being outside, cleaning up marine debris, and communal living!

Applicants must be able to:

- Work in inclement weather and maintain a positive attitude.

- Spend extended periods of time in skiffs operating in unpleasant conditions while transporting debris between islands. This can be “nautical” at times so not getting sea-sick is a win-win for everyone.

- Be enthusiastic to remove marine debris and be outside! The Forrester Island complex is an amazing place, we want people who are excited to be out there and be part of the project.

Duties will include:

- Gathering, sorting, and collecting data on the marine debris.

- Opportunistic collection of Steller sea lion scat samples and Cassin’s auklet gular pouch samples (neither samples will require animal handling).

- Helping out with camp chores including cooking, cleaning, sample preparation, and helping out with general tasks around camp.

- Maneuvering and driving skiffs.

Time frame is still being decided but it will be approximately May 25th/30th- July 3rd/10th. Apply by March 31st, 2022.
