Resurrection Lutheran Church (RLC) has proposed allocating space within its facility located at 740 W 10th Street to operate the Cold Weather Emergency Shelter (CWES) – AKA, the Warming Shelter – for the City and Borough of Juneau (CBJ). While RLC will not know whether it will be operating warming shelter until the CBJ Planning Commission decides on RLC’s Conditional Use Permit Application on November 9th, RLC will be required to open on November 15th, or the next night when the predicted temperature to be below 32°. As such, the church must make certain preparations to operate the shelter, including searching for staff. Staff members work generally from 10:30 pm to 7 am on nights the RLC Warming Shelter is open - generally when night temperatures are predicted (at 3:00 pm on the prior day according to NOAA website) to be below 32°). Two staff members operate the shelter. Staff members will check-in shelter guests, assist with AKHMIS documentation, provide bedding and other needs for sleeping, assist in waking guests in morning and arranging their transportation out of the shelter.

Primary Responsibilities

Operate shelter with another staff member.

Welcome, care for, protect, and manage guests of the shelter.

Enforce shelter code of conduct.

Check in and complete AKHMIS paperwork (as needed) for guests.

Complete shift reports.

Provide services and support to guest, including beverages in morning.

Set up shelter (if downstairs hall was used that day).

Put away shelter (if downstairs hall will be used that day).

Straighten up shelter for next shift (if downstairs hall not being used).

Ability to simply listen to the shelter’s guests experiencing homelessness.

Other Requirements

Minimum GED diploma or equivalent, and experience commensurate with requirements of the position.

Current first aid, CPR, and food handler cards (will provided, if needed).

Ability to pass a criminal background check.

Possess or obtain an AK Food Worker Card.

Ability to comply with RLC’s COVID-19 Mitigations Policy.
