Title of Position: Heritage Program Resource Assistant
Position Details:
Stewards Individual Placements (SIP) provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting ecosystem health. SIP, in partnership with the USDA Forest Service Alaska Region – Regional Office, are seeking a Heritage Program Resource Assistant. The intern will benefit the Alaska Region Heritage program by implementing a system that will convert inaccessible records to accessible records. The primary project will be completing an inventory of the Heritage program records that are housed at the regional office.
The intern will determine if a record is a federal record, reference material, or at the end of its life cycle. Further, the intern will prepare federal records for shipment to National Archives and ultimately organize Heritage program reference material for permanent housing at the regional office. Overall, the intern will benefit the organization by ensuring that Alaska Region Heritage program records are archived appropriately and readily accessible.
Position Responsibilities will include:
Go through all Heritage program file drawers and storage containers to identify where records are located.
Determine if a record is unique or a duplicate, destroying duplicates and populating each unique record in the inventory spreadsheet.
Use the definition of a Heritage program federal record, file code 2360, to determine if a record is a federal record, reference material, or should be destroyed.
Destroy records that do not meet the definition of federal record or reference material.
Organize federal records into one area and reference material into another.
Develop a file naming system and electronic file structure in collaboration with supervisor.
Remove staples and other fasteners, scan federal records, name file and save file to the appropriate electronic folder.
Box up scanned records, include catalog of items in box, and ship to National Archives.
Develop a file structure for hard copy reference materials, and organize so that items are locatable by topic.
Implement the file structure.
Share the inventory of reference material with Heritage staff.
Minimum Requirements:
Area of study: History, Archaeology, Anthropology, Museum Studies, and/or Archival Studies
Level of study: Current undergrad
Must be a US Citizen and/or be a lawful permanent resident
Must be minimum 18 years old
