Introduction

The Fairbanks Youth for Habitat Program is an educational work service program that has been improving local habitat and providing a unique experience for local youth since 2009. The program seeks to improve local wildlife habitats and provide youth with skills and knowledge for continued partnerships in natural resource related activities that provide a benefit for critical habitat.

The Fairbanks Soil & Water Conservation District (FSWCD) is an outreach and technical assistance organization whose mission is to serve its cooperators, private landowners, and all citizens of the district by promoting wise development and conservation of natural resources. With sponsorship from US Fish and Wildlife Service, FSWCD provides support and technical assistance for the program and now coordinates all aspects of the program.

The FSWCD is seeking a candidate with experience in natural resource management and working with youth. The candidate must demonstrate the ability to supervise kids, show patience and good judgement and be able to fill a teacher/mentor role. Daily tasks are varied and inconsistent- sometimes requiring short-notice changes/substitutions.

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Plan, organize, and coordinate all daily activities for groups of up to 8 youth, ages 13-15.

2. Plan and implement technical projects such as streambank restoration, green infrastructure, and other natural resource related enhancements.

3. Provide supervision and support for participating youth in all aspects of the program.

4. Other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

1. Must be organized and flexible with the ability to multi-task.

2. Excellent communication and problem-solving skills are essential.

3. Must show the ability to follow directions and follow through on all assigned tasks.

4. Adaptability and willingness to deal with unpredictability.

5. Able to use a variety of power and manual tools including saws, hammers, shovels, etc.

6. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. and perform labor that can be strenuous at times.

7. Must be independent, self-motivated and require little supervision for daily tasks.

8. Valid driver’s license and passing a federal background check are required.

Desired Skills

1. Knowledgeable in stream bank restoration and revegetation techniques.

2. Experience working with youth specifically related to natural resource management.

3. Training in education and/or natural resource management.

4. Familiarity with water monitoring and testing, and/or fish species ID.

5. Knowledge of local environments, flora, and fauna and locally invasive species.

This position begins in late-April on a part-time basis and will switch to full time (40 hrs per week) from May through late August 2021, working approximately 600 hours total. Pay starts at $19/hr, DOE.
