The Chore and Respite Worker provides supportive care for physically frail elders and persons of any age with Alzheimer’s disease or a related disorder (ADRD). The duties of the position include, but are not limited to, providing non-medical custodial care, and light household chores under the direction of the Chore and Respite Manager. The position will communicate with the client and/or families and the Chore and Respite staff to ensure the delivery of quality care and services.
Essential Job Functions
Provide direct non-medical care for clients.
Assist the client with activities of daily living and instrumental activities of daily living.
Monitor the safety needs of the client to ensure safe surroundings, and if necessary, take emergency action.
Meet with the client and/or caregiver for input and instruction concerning special needs.
Provide light household chores.
Provide companionship and meaningful, age-appropriate, stimulating activities.
Maintain effective communication with the Chore and Respite staff, clients and/or families.
Schedule work times with the assigned client/family and the agency.
Complete required client activity notes as directed.
Participate in 10 hours of client care related in-service training annually.
Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Requirements and Qualifications
Must be 18 years of age or older.
High school diploma or the equivalent.
Six months experience in non-medical care preferred but not required of frail elders and/or persons with Alzheimer’s Disease and related disorders (ADRD) . Willing to train the right person
Ability to communicate in English, both verbally and in writing.
Have the skills to work independently, schedule work hours with both client/family and the agency.
Use independent judgment interpreting agency rules and policies following consultation with a supervisor.
Current CPR/First Aid certification and subsequent recertification before expiration we will train on site .
Negative TB screening and annual negative re-screening. Paid for by the agency
Successfully pass a state and federal criminal background check.
Valid Alaska driver’s license with a good driving record and proof of auto insurance and reliable transportation .
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Ability to work with clients that have a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders.
Ability to assist clients with activities of daily living including personal hygiene, and toileting.
Knowledge of proper food preparation and storage techniques.
Knowledge of proper use of cleaning supplies and cleaning techniques.
Ability to be sensitive to clients of all cultures, physical and cognitive conditions.
Good verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to work independently, follow directions on service plans and organize materials and time.
Ability to drive, and to use personal vehicle for Agency business.
Physical and Special Requirements
Must have the ability to perform lifting and transferring of no less than fifty pounds and demonstrate good body mechanics while performing these tasks.
Must be able to climb stairs and access individuals in non-accessible rooms or apartments.
Ability to travel as needed to perform job duties.
