Job DescriptionThe Assistant Corporate Controller is responsible for managing his or her department groups along with other areas of responsibility; will work with the Corporate Controller and Financial Reporting Group to produce monthly and other periodic financial and business reports. The Assistant Corporate Controller assists the Corporate Controller in achieving financial strategic objectives as well as implementing operating policies and procedures to ensure attainment of organizational objectives; Evaluates results within business units to determine if financial objectives are being met; Establishes and coordinates responsibilities and procedures among subordinates; Maintains relationships with CPA and Regulatory Auditors, Business Unit Controllers and Departmental leaders; manages the annual budget process and oversees the corporate cost allocation process; Maintains high standards for effective, efficient, and automated practices, processes, and controls in compliance with GAAP; Provides centralized reporting and tracking of financial metrics; ensures department activities run smoothly and efficiently; provides leadership, training and supervision within the department/organization; provides a high level of departmental/subsidiary relations and service; and ensures compliance with NANA policies and procedures. The position of Assistant Corporate Controller assists in attaining established NANA and department goals. Performs supervisory duties of department staff, coordinates staff for coverage in all related areas of the department. May perform additional managerial duties in the absence of the Corporate Controller and is expected to provide leadership, training and guidance to less experienced managers and staff members. Performs grant analysis and internal/external reporting; ensures regulatory compliance requirements are met. Assures compliance with all NANA policies and procedures, as well as all applicable state and federal regulations.Responsibilities
Manage the day-to-day accounting operations, including maintenance of the General Ledger at NANA Regional Corporation and each entity that NANA Regional Corporation supports.
Ensure the preparation of monthly account reconciliations for all significant general ledger accounts and validate the accuracy and substance of schedules supporting the reconciliations with an effectively implemented departmental review process.
Management responsibility for all aspects of the monthly NANA close process including review of monthly financial statements of P&L, Balance Sheet, and Cash Flow; additionally works with the Corporate Controller to act as key coordinator across all business units to ensure timely and accurate flow of information to ensure reporting and disclosure requirement are met.
Responsible for planning, development, and implementation of financial procedures. This includes working with the CFO and Corporate Controller to ensure that consistent minimum financial and reporting standards are met at NANA and subsidiary companies.
Responsible for accurate and legal financial practices and reporting consistent with GAAP and regulatory requirements. Aids and expertise to less-experienced companies and staff.
Develop an effective environment to train employees and provide the tools for employees to efficiently complete their assigned tasks. Help define career progression tracks for direct reports by finding the appropriate path and providing the support to help them get there.
Establishes and maintains appropriate analytical tools, information systems, and models of cost behavior to ensure effective and efficient management of resources.
Research, interpret, and document technical accounting issues and development of company policy on GAAP and FASB standards; Stay abreast of activities in the Company and the industries NANA operates in to ensure that any effects are properly incorporated into the output of financial information; Communicate business impact of changing standards on the external financial statement and disclosures.
Prescribes limits of authority among subordinates regarding policies, expenditures, and personal actions.
Contributes to the overall profitability of the department and NANA; implements costs controls and monitors expenses to ensure compliance with budget.
Assists other departments and subsidiaries in resolving inquiries and providing staff support.
Gathers and calculates data associated with the preparation of various routine and special financial statements and reports; reviews documentation for accuracy and completeness; highlights critical areas of the documentation for management’s review; and presents and explains reports and documentation to senior management.
Works with the Corporate Controller to ensure that annual budget projections are appropriately based on input from executives; reviews expenditures to ensure compliance with budgets; and notifies appropriate executive(s) in the event expenditures exceed budgets. Works with IT to determine that budgets have been appropriately uploaded into the ERP.

Maintains advanced knowledge and awareness of financial/accounting industry status and trends.
Responds to inquiries or refers inquiries to the appropriate department or person, and exhibiting the necessary follow through with related companies and/or staff involved.
Provides supervision and support to all areas of the department where service or assistance is needed; oversees activities of assigned department personnel; opens and closes the department.
Monitors staff in daily tasks, operations, and quality control; ensures the organization of assigned areas of the department, coordinating available resources (e.g., staff, materials, etc.) for maximum results.
Assists the Corporate Controller in implementing cost controls for the department and monitors expenses to ensure compliance with budget.
Consistently applies superior decision-making techniques pertaining to inquiries, approvals, and requests as they apply to existing policies and procedures, keeping within assigned approval limits and using these instances as learning tools for employee development.
Assumes responsibility for special projects; gathers data and prepares reports for Senior Management, audits, and other personnel.
Plays a positive role in the development and growth of assigned department staff through excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, along with strong delegation skills assuring a highly cross-trained staff.
Performs personnel actions including performance appraisals, disciplinary actions, and interviewing candidates for employment; supervises the daily activities of the department including, but not limited to, effective delegation of assignments, developing work schedules and providing necessary training
Operates computer terminal or personal computer to process account activity, determine balances and resolve problems.
Answers telephones, answers questions and directs callers to proper NANA personnel.
Assumes responsibility for various department functions in the absence of staff members or in overload situations.

Performs analysis and review of the data reported under specific grants; ensures compliance with the grant award provisions, all applicable statutes and regulations, financial reporting and all other regulatory requirements.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree from a 4-year college or university and 4 years of related experience and/or training; or the equivalent combination of education and experience; MBA degree and/or CPA is preferred. Work related experience should consist of an in-depth background in finance, treasury, accounting, management, and supervisory skills. Educational experience, through in-house training sessions, formal school, or financial industry related curriculum, should be applicable to the treasury function.
Advanced experience, knowledge and training in progressively responsible finance/accounting/treasury functions, company operations, grant analysis and reporting, management, and supervisory activities.
Advanced knowledge of general finance, treasury, accounting, forecasting, budgeting, and related accounting, and record keeping systems.
Advanced knowledge of related state and federal compliance regulations, and treasury policies and procedures.
Advanced skills related to the consolidation and reporting of financial results, and formulation and implementation of accounting procedures.
Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, and technical procedures.
Excellent organizational and time management skills, with the ability to provide leadership, supervision and training for 10 or more employees using positive supervisory techniques to ensure maximum productivity; demonstrated ability in organization and delegation skills.
Intermediate knowledge of human resource and labor laws and policies.
Intermediate skills in computer terminal and personal computer operation; mainframe computer system; word processing, spreadsheet, and specialty software programs.
Intermediate typing skills to meet production needs of the position.
Advanced math skills: ability to calculate interest, commissions, proportions, and percentages; balance accounts; add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals; locate routine mathematical errors; compute rate, ratio and percent, including the drafting and interpretation of bar graphs.
Exceptional verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to apply common sense to carry out instructions and instruct others, train personnel, write reports, correspondence, and procedures, speak clearly to members and employees.
Thorough understanding of management procedures; ability to plan department or NANA activities (setting objectives, developing strategies, budgeting, and developing policies and procedures); initiative to organize various functions necessary to accomplish department or NANA activities; effectively staff (selecting, training and developing employees); directing employees towards the desired objectives (delegating, motivating, resolving problems); controlling the function (developing performance standards, measuring results, taking corrective action and rewarding employees as appropriate).
Ability to deal with complex problems involving multiple facets and variables in non-standardized situations.
Ability to work with no supervision while performing duties.
Current Alaska driver’s license and a vehicle with appropriate insurance coverage if required to drive in the course of performing assigned duties and responsibilities.
