This position involves supporting education staff and the Education Director in providing information about the zoo facility, its collection of animals and conservation to general public through programs, presentations and tours. This is a full-time non-exempt hourly position with a pay rate of $13/hour. This position reports to the zoo’s Education Director Rich Capitan. Travel for programs within the Anchorage area will be required.

Roles and responsibilities:

Develop educational materials for presentations, handouts or workbooks and adapt materials for various age groups from preschool children to adults.

Host educational animal demonstrations in conjunction with Husbandry staff.

Develop and implement educational programs to present via distance learning.

Periodically acts as camp leader for children ages six (6) to twelve (12).

Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and education requirements: Bachelors’ Degree in Natural Sciences or Education - OR - Pursuing a similar type of degree - OR - Equivalent job experience. Exceptional customer service skills. Must be a team player with strong interpersonal and communication skills.

Preferred skills:

Ability to use a variety of interpretive techniques to convey information to the public.

Good public speaking ability and willingness to give presentations to a large audience.

Previous animal experience preferred, but not required.

Previous experience with distance learning equipment a plus.

Physical requirements: Must occasionally lift and/or move up to fifty (50) pounds. Ability to work in Alaska weather extremes. While performing duties of this job, you will be required to stand, walk, sit, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop or kneel, talk and hear, and use fingers and hands to feel objects, tools or controls.
