Access Alaska is seeking a qualified individual to fill a full-time Independent Living Advocate position. An ideal candidate will have strong communication and problem-solving skills and be familiar with community resources. This position will actively assist persons experiencing disabilities to live independently in the community of their choice by establishing and achieving goals related to physical, emotional, economic, and overall independence. The Independent Living Advocate works alongside consumers to overcome barriers and acquire life skills so they can succeed with their self-identified objectives. This position provides information and guidance related to various types of vocational, educational, housing, transportation, and other community resources. Independent Living Advocate will engage in development of goal plans; networking and outreach in the community, timely data entry, and provide referrals as needed.

Position Requirements
BA/BS in Human Services preferred; Two (2) years of college or equivalent work experience.
Experience working directly with clients or consumers.
Mental health experience preferred.

Essential Functions
Goal Development
Assesses the consumer’s long- and short-term needs and goals during the initial contact. Establishes eligibility or makes appropriate timely referrals with consistent follow-up. Helps consumers develop an Independent Living (IL) Plan that reflects their individual goals and needs; structures the IL Plan, completes appropriate documentation, and establishes individual goals; assists consumers to acquire the specialized skills or increased capacities needed to implement their IL plan.
Skills Training
Structures and provides consumer training based on individual goals or service requests.
Schedules or facilitates appropriate training, concentrating on home and community-based IL skill development and individual responsibility.
Helps consumers access resources and information including multi-agency collaboration and education regarding their rights, how to self-advocate for their needs, and how to complete the administrative process and paperwork needed to secure those services.
Provides vocational and employment skill building activities (i.e. resume writing, interview skills, professionalism, job search skills) to assist consumers to find and sustain consistent work.
Service Coordination
Available to help develop timely solutions to disability and daily living barriers.
Assists with locating and contacting peers, professionals, and role models in the community to ensure timely integrated service delivery; and refers consumers to appropriate services.
Attends community events and meetings related to IL issues and services as assigned by supervisory staff.
Coordinates daily and weekly schedule with consumers and other staff; routinely reviews service plans with Supervisor.
Helps provide consumers with access to Assistive Technology, Computer lab and additional Access Alaska equipment.
May help prepare and assemble equipment for consumers and assist with checking equipment in and out of our Loan Closet.
Assists with the facilitation of Peer Support Groups as assigned by supervisor. Enters goals, all contacts and demographic information in system thoroughly, accurately, and consistently.
Available and responsive to assist walk-in consumers.
Advocacy
Participates in efforts that empower people with disabilities to create lasting system changes.
Conducts meetings/workshops to heighten awareness & respect for personal disabilities. Provides testimony and letters of support for individual consumers.
Networks with community resources to ensure an understanding of Access Alaska’s services and the services available in the community for our consumers.
Assist consumers with personal advocacy tasks. Other duties as assigned.
