Accounts Payable Specialist

POSITION SUMMARY:

This position, under the direction of the Knik Tribe’s Chief Financial Officer, maintains financial records and assists with general day-to-day tasks within the finance department. Performs a variety of general accounting tasks related to the processing and maintenance of accounts payable records, invoices, reimbursements, vendor statements, 1099’s and financial reports. Serve as backup to the Accounts Receivable Specialist.

DESCRIPTON OF DUTIES:

The successful candidate will:

Operate computers programmed with accounting software to record, store, and analyze account payable information.

Perform general office duties such as filing, answering telephones, and handling routine correspondence.

Check figures, postings, and documents for correct entry, mathematical accuracy, and proper codes.

Classify, record, and summarize numerical and financial data to compile and keep financial records, using journals and computers.

Comply with federal, state, and company policies, procedures, and regulations.

Compile statistical, financial, accounting or auditing reports and tables pertaining to such matters as cash receipts, expenditures, accounts payable and receivable, and profits and losses.

Code documents according to company procedures.

Reconcile or note and report discrepancies found in records.

Access computerized financial information to answer general questions as well as those related to specific accounts.

Match order forms with invoices and record the necessary information.

Prepare various accounting reports.

Calculate and prepare checks/ACH for utilities, taxes, and other payments needed.

Calculate and prepare checks for employee reimbursement payments.

Process travel request, to include calculating per diem amounts.

Set up vendors for 1099 reporting and request W-9 forms as necessary.

Enter journal entries as needed.

Perform financial calculations such as amounts due, interest charges, and discounts related to accounts payable.

As back up to the Accounts Receivable Specialist

o Prepare and process credit card payments

o Code and enter cash receipts

o Make bank deposits

Performs other related duties as assigned.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

1744 N Prospect Drive, Palmer. Monday through Friday, flexible schedule available. Travel to occasional trainings or meetings may be required.

CONTACT:

Immediate peers, peers in other departments, immediate supervisor/manager, managers in other departments, executives, council members, and other individuals.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

The tasks of this position are normally performed while sitting at a desk, often using a computer. Regular lifting of up to 10 pounds, and occasional lifting of up to 25 pounds is expected. Must be able to maintain an excellent attendance record.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education:

Associates degree in Accounting, or closely related field.

Experience:

Familiar with generally accepted accounting principles.

Strong technical and organizational skills

3+ years computer experience required, with knowledge of excel.

2+ years of accounting/finance experience required.

2+ years working within a financial system required.

Must possess sound understanding and experience in the application of general, cost and tax accounting, budgets and budgetary controls, awareness of the significance and application of financial controls and detailed knowledge of the financial objective, policies, and procedures of the company.

Exceptional analytical, written, and verbal communication skills

Discretion and experience working with confidential information.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Knowledge and experience of Knik Tribe’s Service Area and Knik Tribe’s Programs.

Adequate understanding of all Microsoft Office Applications.

Capable of basic maintenance for general office equipment and multi-line phone systems.

Must pass a criminal background check and be free of barrier crimes.

Clean driving record.

Supervisor: Chief Financial Officer

Schedule: Monday – Friday; 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM

Salary: $18.00 - $24.00 per hour DOE/E. Plus full benefits: Federal Employee Health Benefits (FEHB) medical, dental, vision, life insurance, paid leave and holidays, and retirement plan with matching contributions.
