JOB DESCRIPTION: This family is responsible for performing database administration in support of the Database Management Systems (DBMS) applications. Responsible for software development and maintenance teams, including database definition, structure, long-range requirements, operational guidelines, and security and integrity controls. May propose and implement enhancements to improve performance and reliability. May maintain databases across multiple platforms and computer environments. SCOPE: Performs complex database administration assignments essential to the production and development of Database Management Systems (DBMS) applications. Assignments, which are in direct support of software development and maintenance teams, include database analysis, security support, design, software use, performance monitoring and tuning, and general technical expertise. Reviews and ensures integrity via standardized support tools. Ensures and monitors that assignments are performed in accordance with database administration guidelines, standards and procedures for applications development, implementation, testing, and migration. Responds to complex customer-reported systems problems. Evaluates and recommends use of software, guidelines, procedures, and development of project plans to lower level staff. Provides DBMS expertise to other groups as requested. Provides work direction and guidance to others. PROBLEM COMPLEXITY: Works on extremely complex problems where analysis of situations or data requires an evaluation of intangible variables. Exercises independent judgment in developing methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results. IMPACT: Decisions will result in critical delay(s) in schedules and/or unit operations and may jeopardize overall business activities. LIAISON: Regularly interacts with senior management or executive levels on matters concerning several functional areas, divisions, and/or customers. Requires the ability to change the thinking of, or gain acceptance of others in sensitive situations. FREEDOM TO ACT: Works under consultative direction toward predetermined long-range targets. Determines and pursues courses of action essential in obtaining desired outcomes. Act independently to determine methods and procedures on new assignments and may supervise or provide guidance to other personnel. LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT: - KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS AND ABILITY: Involves complete knowledge of this administrative field and the ability to complete difficult and complex assignments. Mastery of the job.
