SURVEY INSTRUMENT OPERATOR

Koontz Bryant Johnson Williams is an established, fast-growing civil engineering and land surveying firm headquartered in Henrico, VA. We are seeking an Instrument Operator for our Survey Division.

SUMMARY:

Assists in the collection of survey data and the maintenance of the survey instrumentation. Responsible for assigned surveying activities, including holding the prism pole for measurements, clearing the route of the survey, and carrying survey supplies during the collection of survey data. Works with the Party Chief and Survey Instrument Operator to execute the survey work.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Responsibilities:

-Operate electronic total station instrument run and adjust survey measuring instruments including level, transit, theodolite, electronic measuring devices and total stations with electronic data collecting capabilities

-Take field notes of readings and observations

-Operate and maintain vehicle and field equipment

-Perform field and office calculations and know principles of staking and marking

-Performs other related field and office duties as assigned

MAHEMATICAL SKILLS:

-Valid driver's license required

-Mathematics through algebra, geometry, and trigonometry; modern and office engineering terminology, equipment, practices and principles.

-Basic knowledge of: survey theory, including slope reduction and differential level.

-Skill to: set up, operate, clean, adjust, and maintain survey instruments and equipment; to make field notes, sketches and calculations either manually or using electronic equipment; drive on paved and unpaved surfaces.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Ability to walk several miles per day while carrying supplies and equipment, weighing in excess of 40 pounds. Ability to clear line with a machete, brush axe, or chain saw.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Outdoor environment. Must be able to perform job duties in a variety of terrains. Must also be able to perform job duties in every type of weather including snow, rain, and high heat/humidity.
