SummaryThe primary purpose of this position is to serve as a lifeguard and perform other duties related swimming facility duties. May be required to act as a senior lifeguard at a large swimming facility or the only lifeguard at a smaller facility.ResponsibilitiesMonitor activities within assigned swimming facility. Observe the condition and behavior of swimmers to ascertain any potential problems.Rescue and resuscitate individuals in danger of drowning and renders first aid to injuries. Use a variety of techniques such as artificial respiration, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and first aid.Clean and maintain the swimming facility. Clean swimming assigned area (e.g. bathrooms, decks, locker rooms, showers, pool, etc.).Conduct swimming lessons by following prescribed lesson plan. Consult with senior swimming instructor concerning lessons, lesson plans and any problems.Verify customers are authorized to use facility by checking appropriate identification.RequirementsConditions of EmploymentQualificationsIn order to qualify, you must meet the general experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions and Technical & Medical Support Positions. GENERAL EXPERIENCE: Six months of general experience equivalent to the GS-02 level. General experience is (1) any type of work that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work of the position or (2) experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation. OR EDUCATION: One year of education above high school. IN ADDITION TO MEETING THE QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS ABOVE APPLICANTS MUST ALSO MEET THE CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS LISTED BELOW: Applicants must submit at the time of application a current and valid nationally recognized: (a) lifeguard certification covering lifesaving and water rescue methods, skills and procedures and (b) basic first aid certification and (c) water safety instructor certification and (d) CPR certification which includes adult, child and infant procedures. FAILURE TO SUBMIT THESE REQUIRED DOCUMENTS WILL RESULT IN AN INELIGIBLE RATING. Knowledge of a variety of lifesaving, first aid, CPR, water safety instruction and associated techniques and procedures as would be acquired through previous experience.

Knowledge of a variety of swimming facility rules, work procedures, equipment and materials to perform standing, recurring tasks and special tasks such as providing swimming lessons under specific instructions from the supervisor.

Ability to communicate both orally and in writing. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
