POSITION OVERVIEWApplications accepted from: ALL PERSONS INTERESTEDClassification: Mechanic IIPosting Number: PN # 21763Department: Fleet ManagementDivision: Fleet OperationsWorkdays & Hours: VARIOUS (may require working weekends, holidays and shifts)Subject to changeDESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONSThe Fleet Management Department is seeking candidates to perform scheduled and unscheduled maintenance repairs and related services to various types of vehicular equipment. Maintains and repairs heavy and light mechanical equipment parts and components. Performs minor overhauls and services on manual transmissions, diesel engines, air brakes, suspension, exhaust, fuel, cooling, electrical systems and vehicle component repairs. Keeps track of repair time and reports time on work orders. Stays current on new technology. Rebuilds vehicle components. Repairs electrical and air conditioning systems. Uses hand tools, hoists, pressure gages, drills, grinding wheels and technical manuals. MUST FURNISH OWN TOOLS AND SAFETY SHOES.WORKING CONDITIONSThere is routine exposure to significant levels of heat, cold moisture and air pollution. The position may involve periodic exposure to chemical substances and physical trauma of a minor nature such as cuts bruises and minor burns. The position may require occasional periods of stooping, bending and/or lifting of materials up to 50 pounds. ADDITIONAL INCENTIVES

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTSMINIMUM EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS Requires a high school degree or a GED certificate. May require up to 18 months of vocational education/training in automotive maintenance or repair (i.e., NIASE). MINIMUM EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS Two years equivalent of automotive maintenance and repair experience are required.MINIMUM LICENSE REQUIREMENTS Requires a valid Texas driver's license and compliance with the City of Houston's policy on driving. May require a valid Class A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) if the position requires operation of a heavy vehicle. Departments with a CDL training program may require a position to obtain an A or B CDL within six (6) months of entering the position. In the Fire Department, a State of Texas Inspection License may be preferred.PREFERENCESApplicants with Med/Heavy Duty DIESEL knowledge and experience. ASE- Air Brake Systems Diagnostic & Repairs Certification, and/or State of Texas Inspection License and candidates with Class A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is a plus. If you are the selected candidate working on Heavy Duty equipment you will be required to obtain a CDL within 6 months of employment.Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.GENERAL INFORMATIONSELECTION/SKILLS TESTS REQUIRED The department may administer a skill assessment.
