Physician to serve under the Pulmonary Section of Medicine Service

MANAGEMENT.Learn more about this agencyResponsibilitiesThe Ralph H. Johnson Veterans Affairs Medical Center (RHJVAMC) in

partnership with our academic affiliate, the Medical University of

South Carolina (MUSC), seeks to recruit two part- to full-time staff

physician(s) with training and certification in pulmonary and

critical care medicine. In addition, there are opportunities to work

in sleep medicine. The physician(s) chosen will play an integral

role in the management, growth, and future direction of our

Pulmonary/Critical Care/Sleep Section at our growing 1A VAMC

facility. These physicians will build on the existing strengths and

commitment to service excellence, high quality Veteran care,

education, and scholarly endeavors in an environment that

underscores a respect for diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Responsibilities will include promoting and conducting high-quality

patient-centric clinical care including lab-based, inpatient and

outpatient consultation, mentoring trainees, mid-level providers,

and for senior level physicians, junior faculty, developing an

outstanding educational experience for learners of all levels, and

conducting scholarly research and quality improvement. There is a

high demand for outpatient pulmonary consultation and the candidates

should anticipate a significant proportion of their work being in

this area. A robust ACGME-accredited fellowship training program in

Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep provides ample teaching

opportunities. The RHJ VAMC has strong funded programs in health

services research, health care disparities, clinical trials, and

basic science. Collaboration with faculty or other investigators at

the RHJ VAMC or MUSC is available. Protected time for clinical or

basic research can be supported based on interest, previous work,

and funding. The Physician(s) will report under the Medicine Service

and Pulmonary Section at the VAMC and will have an academic

appointment at MUSC, which may include additional clinical,

teaching, research, and administrative responsibilities. The

division of time between the two medical centers is negotiable.

Applicants must have an MD or equivalent degree and must be ABIM

Board eligible / certified in Pulmonary and Critical Care.

Additional certification in Sleep Medicine is desirable. Previous VA

experience is a strong plus. The appropriate candidate will have

experience and training supporting requirements for an academic

appointment at an early- to senior-career level.Work Schedule: If full-time, 8:00AM - 4:30PM, Monday through

Friday; if part-time, hours are negotiable.

(EDRP), a student loan reimbursement program. If selected for this

position, you must meet specific individual eligibility requirement,

QualificationsTo qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements

Basic Requirements:

- United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed

when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in

accordance with VA Policy.

- Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting

from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine.

The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools

approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in

which the course of study was completed.

- Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or

surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United

States, or in the District of Columbia.

- Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by

the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core

specialty training program leading to eligibility for board

certification.

- Proficiency in spoken and written English.

II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found

in the local Human Resources Office.Physical Requirements: The population of male and female

veterans served ranges from the adult, age 18, to the elderly adult,

age 65 and over. The Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center is a major

interdisciplinary teaching facility, serving medical, surgical, and

neurological inpatients and outpatients. There is a large outpatient

psychiatric population, with admissions for medical co-morbidities.

This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear

distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position requires

potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, stooping,

sitting, bending, pulling, pushing, and lifting of claim files which

can be multiple volumes. Transferring patients and objects may be

required. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and

contaminated materials and may be required to don protective

clothing in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures.

The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are

combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders.

The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual

capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to
