LEAD LIFEGUARD

SALARY: $13.48 to $16.39/hour

DEPARTMENT: Recreation

DIVISION: Pool

PURPOSE:

Ensure the safety of patrons and visitors at Swimming Pool. Assist in directing and training of pool staff including Lifeguards and Swim Instructors. Oversee patrons in pool setting and perform water rescue as needed. Educate patrons on, and model pool safety procedures. Maintain a safe, sanitary work environment. Provide high quality customer service to all patrons, visitors and guests, May assume the duties of supervision in the absence of Aquatic Supervisor or Assistant Aquatic Supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Any equivalent combination of education and experience, which provides the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the duties as described. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills and experience would be: A high school diploma AND completion of an approved Lifeguard training program, completion of an approved CPR and First Aid certification course, AND at least two years of lifeguarding experience and pool operations.

KNOWLEDGE: Knowledge of Lifeguard techniques, philosophies, and behaviors that are conducive to ensuring a safe aquatic environment. Knowledge of supplies and equipment, basic rules and skills involved in a variety of aquatic programs. Knowledge of techniques in overseeing various aquatic and other recreational activities. Knowledge of the philosophy, and objectives of the recreation profession, and the purpose, use, and benefit of various elements of specific programs. Knowledge of basic swimming and swim instruction skills, basic water safety, and swim instruction.

SKILLS: Adequate swimming and water skills, skills in using typical rescue equipment, skill in the use of personal computers, various related software programs, standard office equipment, and swimming pool equipment. Strong customer service skills. Basic water safety skills. Exceptional interpersonal skills, strong oral and written communications skills with a variety of audiences. Strong reasoning, analysis, and problem-solving skills combined with excellent judgment and professionalism. Leadership skills.

ABILITIES: Ability to establish and maintain an effective and professional working relationship with City management, supervisors, employees, Council members, other entities, and the public. Ability to communicate effectively and professionally, both orally and in writing, with individuals and groups. Ability to honor the confidentiality required of this position. Physical ability to perform the essential job functions. Ability to perform the rescue skills and first aid skills required in the job. Ability to multi-task in a busy environment. Ability to communicate and interact with a variety of people, be self-motivated, and carry assignments through to completion. Ability to use discretion. Be able to work independently and in a teamwork environment. Attention to detail in all aspects of the job, physical ability to perform the essential job functions. Must have the physical strength and endurance necessary to rescue a struggling victim in the water. Required to possess the visual and hearing acuity necessary to detect and rescue a struggling victim in the water.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand, climb, bend, kneel, stoop, communicate, reach, and manipulate objects. The position requires the employee to sit for extended periods. The position requires the employee to remain focused and attentive for extended periods. The position requires mobility including the ability to frequently lift or move materials up to 25 pounds, occasionally lift materials up to 50 pounds, and rarely lift or move materials more than 100 pounds. Manual dexterity, strength and coordination are required approximately 40% of the time to operate equipment such as AEDts, water rescue backboards, rescue equipment, lane lines, pool lifts, rope swing, pool vacuums, computers, keyboards, telephones, standard office equipment, and recreational equipment. The position requires the employee to climb up a ladder of approximately six feet to reach the position in the higher lifeguard stations. The position requires the mobility to interact with and use parks and recreation equipment. The position risks harm from physical hazards, including chemicals, fumes, wet and slippery surfaces, and swimming pools. A high degree of hand "eye coordination is required at all times.

Must have the physical strength and endurance necessary to rescue a struggling victim in the water. Required to possess the visual and hearing acuity necessary to detect and rescue a struggling victim in the water.

WORKING CONDITIONS/WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work location is primarily indoors where most of work period occurs in a recreational/swimming pool setting. Working conditions will vary, depending on assigned programs and will involve considerable exposure to humidity, water, and an environment where chemicals may be present. Must wear uniform and proper footwear while on duty.
