The Skills Coach position gives support to our youth on a daily basis: being a safe and caring resource while supporting the youth's psychiatric goals by utilizing coping skills, emotional response, and collaborative problem solving. Our inpatient treatment center works with youth age 11-17 years old.

Qualified Mental Health Associate – Grants Pass, Oregon

Job Description:

Primary purpose: New Beginnings is an in-patient therapeutic milieu with residents between the ages of 11-17 who need additional support in developing life skills. Our skills coaches build rapport and assist our youth in developing healthy interactions, coping skills, and emotional responses to their environment / life stages. The perfect candidate would Meet Qualified Mental Health Associate classifications as outlined by Oregon State certification (MAHCBO).

Minimum Qualifications:

A Bachelor's degree in an applied behavioral science (psychology, Social Science, Sociology, social work, Cultural Anthropology) or

3 years of work experience in a Human Service/ Mental Health field or

A mix of relevant education and work experience weighing heavily on work experience

Will need to obtain and maintain a National Provider Identification (NPI) through a credentialing application process.

Candidates will also need to pass a criminal background check

Must obtain and maintain current First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification and Food Handlers card.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Be a safe and caring resource for our youth, young adults, and their families.

Establish rapport by demonstrating and maintain clear, consistent, appropriate, and therapeutic boundaries.

Document daily clinical information on behaviors and interactions of clients in public and in the therapeutic milieu, giving concise detail and focused reports pertinent to their therapeutic goals and achievements, as well as any regression of behaviors associated with their diagnosis

Interact and intervene at critical times to support and maintain therapeutic and personal goals of the youth / young adult to reinforce healthy interactions, coping skills, and emotional response to environment / life stages

Active supervision and interaction with youth and young adults both in the community and within the therapeutic milieu to maintain safety and provide psychiatric services.

Demonstrate alignment with the philosophy of Collaborative problem solving by utilizing the approaches in interactions with youth and young adults, families, staff, and community partners.

Safely de-escalate youth and young adults, including in crisis situations, by effectively using verbal intervention skills while maintaining a calm demeanor

Be able to maintain a positive and supportive attitude: maintain positive communication and peer support in the work environment

Abide by ethical codes, mission, values, and professional standards, including confidentiality

Perform all work tasks in a proper and safe manner, abiding by company policies, procedures, and guidelines to prevent unnecessary injury, time loss and agency expense.

Comply with all federal, state, and agency health and safety reporting requirements as a mandatory reporter.

Occasionally provide transportation of youth and young adults to community activities or appointments using a company vehicle

Day Treatment locations and New Beginnings occasionally utilize TCI techniques and principles to manually restrain. Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain a current Therapeutic Crisis Intervention Certification (that we train for and test on-site). To safely use TCI techniques, you will need to be able withstand occasional intense physical exertion caused by:

Dropping to the knees, supporting another person's weight

Arm and shoulder range of motion involving bending at the elbow and moving at shoulder

Ability to remain balanced while holding a struggling youth

Ability to go from a seated position to a standing position without difficulty

Ability to quickly twist and turn
