Thermal Equipment Design provides comprehensive design and engineering for Corning’s specialized processes. We create the process environment for material transformation and phase change into useful products worldwide. In this role, your activities will include but are not limited to the design for melting, forming, and heat treatment equipment.

Day to Day Responsibilities:

Work on assigned projects

Responsible for Thermal Equipment Engineering assignments; including mechanical design, prototyping, installation, acceptance, and start-up for thermal / fluid flow equipment and process in all Corning Businesses

Contribute individually or in collaboration with internal and external multi-functional teams to rigorously apply engineering principles primarily in the fields of mechanical design, heat transfer and fluid mechanics

Grow in others technical curiosity, competencies and expertise in equipment and process engineering support for manufacturing or mass production with fundamental understanding

Build-on communication, leadership and project management skills on dynamic fast-pace projects in timely manner

Investigate new technologies to enhance thermal processes to ensure Corning’s long-term success

Live all of the Corning values, integrate cultures, cultivate critical thinking and ability to influence

Travel Requirements:

Flexibility is required as there will be travel to our worldwide operations. Frequency and duration vary according to project stage and status. Travel may include project meetings, equipment installation, and commissioning.

Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time:

Our standard workweek is 40hrs., Monday-Friday, 8-5. Overtime for meetings and travel as needed.

Education & Experience:

We do require a BS, MS, or Ph.D. in Mechanical, Material Science or Chemical Engineering.

5+ years of professional experience in equipment or process engineering applied for machine design, equipment / system integration, flow / thermal process, and energy saving.

Required Skills

Practical, working knowledge and application of mechanical, fluid flow, heat transfer and thermal dynamics

Expertise in the application of multiple type of thermal energy sources (Combustion, Induction, Electric Resistive, Microwave, Radio Frequency, etc.)

Excellent Computer Design and Communication Skills (MS Office Suite, AutoCAD and Solid Works)

Design experience incorporating specialized atmospheres, thermal insulation, radiation barriers, etc.

Working knowledge of applicable OSHA, NFPA and NEC safety codes and guidelines

Desired Skills

5+ years’ experience in mechanical/equipment design and engineering; senior engineer designation may be granted based on quantity and nature of prior experience

Familiarity with thermal or flow equipment engineering (e.g. heat treatment, heat exchange, forming, and mixing technology, etc.), and process & manufacturing engineering with methodologies, such as 6-SIGMA, DMAIC, and statistical data-analysis

Knowledge of material selections for flow and thermal equipment in variable process implementations

Skillset in flow / thermal modeling & simulations using CFD software

Diversity of experience and background is an asset
