Safety Service at the VA New Jersey Health Care System in Lyons, New

Jersey.Learn more about this agencyResponsibilitiesIn this position you are responsible for executing a comprehensive

fire prevention and inspection program in residences, multi-story

patient care buildings, psychiatric care unit, community living

center, outpatient clinics and laboratories, residential

rehabilitation centers, multiple story office buildings, carpenter

shop, paint shop, electric shop, general repair shop, warehouse,

fuel storage areas, public assembly areas, brush and wooded areas.

These buildings contain or have a potential to contain large numbers

of persons whose physical or mental condition limits their ability

to protect themselves in the event of a fire.The major duties and responsibilities include but are not limited

to:

Performs fire inspection duties for hazards and safety

violations;

Conducts or oversees periodic testing of fixed fire detection

and suppression systems;

Oversees and directs the issuance of permits;

Inspects new and renovated construction areas for compliance

with National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), Joint

Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Institutions (JCAHO)

and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)

regulations;

Compiles records of deficiencies observed and provides written

recommendations;

Performs preliminary investigations into causes and origin of

fires and serves as a liaison to outside agencies investigating

fire incidents;

Serves as primary coordinator for the Fire Prevention Education

Program;

Assists Fire Chief in the development of building and area

specific plans for employee response;

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Work Schedule: 60-hour work week to include one 24-hour shift

per week on a rotating basis and include a 40-hour administrative

week.Designated Drug-Testing Position: Applicants tentatively

selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are

subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to

appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied

employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position

QualificationsYou must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience that

equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to

perform successfully the duties of a Fire Protection Inspector. To

be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to

at least the GS-6 grade level in Federal service. Specialized

experience is experience that demonstrated the particular knowledge,

skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of

the position. Such duties may include (1) controlling or

extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military,

industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or

brigade; (2) rescue operations; (3) detection, reduction, or

elimination of potential fire hazards; (4) operation of fire

communications equipment; (5) controlling hazardous materials

incidents and/or (6) developing, implementing, or providing training

in fire protection and prevention. Your skills must be documented in

your resume to receive full credit. Volunteer hours per week must be

clearly documented as well.In addition to the above requirements, you must also meet the

following:REQUIREMENTS FOR MOTOR VEHICLE OPERATION: For those positions

requiring employees to drive motorized firefighting equipment,

applicants must possess and maintain a valid State motor vehicle

operator's license of the appropriate classification or kind.

inspections throughout the facility routinely requires considerable

walking, stooping, bending and climbing on a daily basis. You may be

required to lift and carry heavy objects, including equipment over

50 pounds and victims of fires or other emergencies.Working conditions may include heavy physical exertion, extreme

heat, smoke and dust in enclosed smoke filled places, in all types

of weather.The Fire Protection Inspector must pass a fitness for duty

physical. This physical will include examinations for both

firefighter and hazardous materials response. The medical

examination will include but not be limited to a history relating to

the handling and exposure of hazardous materials and your ability to

wear any required personal protective equipment including

respirators and chemical protective clothing, under conditions

including temperature extremes that may be expected at the work

site.Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave:

Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per

pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served

as a Federal employee. VA may offer newly-appointed Federal

employee's credit for their job-related non-federal experience or

active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be

used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such

credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date
