In 1933, in the depths of the Great Depression, Joseph and Frances Siwek began what is now called Siwek Lumber & Millwork Corp. Joseph and Frances were a young couple with a young son, Joe Jr. They struggled to make it. The unemployment rate rose to 25%; 1 in 4 were unemployed. Jobs were scarce and Joseph Sr. was laid- off from his railroad job. Joseph Sr. did the unimaginable- he began a new business in the middle of the Great Depression.
Joseph Sr. was given permission by his former employer at the railroad to dismantle retired wooden boxcars in NorthEast Minneapolis. He bundled the scraps and pedaled them as heating firewood. That, my friend, is how we began selling wood.
Siwek Lumber & Millwork Corp. has the ability to serve the entire metro area and beyond with expertise in remodeling, pole buildings, millwork (door, windows, mouldings), hardwoods, crating and packaging lumber, and more. Our dedication, work ethics, and family responsibilities are just as strong as Joseph Sr.s were in the early 1900s.
