management of the Employer and Individual product portfolios for their assigned

segments. This position reports directly to the California Vice President of

Product and Innovation. The position is responsible for understanding the

competitive lay of the land in the assigned geography, including products,

pricing, network dynamics, medical economics, brand, and distribution, and

executing on the needs at the market level. Under direction of the CA VP of

Product and Innovation, this person will work closely with sales, health plan

leadership, and brokers to identify product and growth opportunities, package

those opportunities into executable ideas, gain support for moving those ideas

forward, and drive the development process.Primary Responsibilities:

Cover a distinct geography and/or segment, where theyare expected to understand the major competitors, overall customer needs,delivery systems, distribution channels, and the regulatory environment

Identify areas where new products will meet the needsof emerging customer bases or the changing needs of existing UHC / Gcustomers

Gather feedback from leadership, sales, brokers,consultants, providers, and industry sources, and turn this feedback intodata we can use to evaluate opportunities

Prepare product development documents for ideas thatreceive positive endorsements, for presentation at Growth Committeemeetings. Effectively communicate how the proposed product will contributeto growth and profitability in the market or region

When projects are approved for further development,this person will be responsible for preparing the specifications, andworking with the implementation teams to eliminate any ambiguity regardingthe details of the product or initiative

Work with National Product Development Team(s) tounderstand how global ideas and emerging technologies can best beimplemented in specific markets, at the regional / market level

Drive and execute short-term, as well as longer-termcompetitive local growth strategies impacting the business direction oftheir specific health plans

Under the direction of the CA VP of Product andInnovation, execute the local product portfolios and growth strategies(including identification of risks and opportunities, and problemresolution). This position is the “feet on the street” at the marketlevel

Interface with Local Sales Leadership, CSU Product andSales Leadership (with particular focus on Small Business and KeyAccounts) and Product Family Owners

Primary interface and “source of truth” at the marketlevel to the Product Infrastructure Team, and Supporting Businesses asneeded (responsible for technical execution of a productintroduction and roll-out)

Drive specifications and timelines essential togrowth and overall roll-out success

Under the direction of the CA VP of Product andInnovation, assimilate and/or incorporate available product,customer and consumer research, field competitive intelligence, andproduct / sales performance indicators to understand businessopportunities and risks as product portfolio(s) are developed androlled-out

Maintenance of existing product portfolio, includingevaluation of the need for changes, sunsetting, re-packaging, etc.

Develop disciplined evaluation process for each healthplan and line of business, to ensure products conform to existing marketand UHC best practices

Propose changes, secure approval from Product, Sales,and Underwriting leadership, and drive the change process through theImplementation team

Communication, including Training, to Sales Leadership,Sales, and distribution channels

Conduct training sessions to explain all new productsand product characteristics / changes

Prepare materials for the market to explain newproducts and product changes

Participate in events where new product initiativesare being covered, including broker seminars and other meetings withdistribution channels

Management Attributes

Ability to interface, influence and/or deliver at thehealth plan level, including CEO’s, Sales VP’s, and Underwritingleadership. Able to work cross- functionally, across the UHCGorganization, to successfully develop regional products

Expertise and experience in strategic productportfolio management and measurement

Ability to analyze / measure performance / financialdata

Required Qualifications:

5+ yrs. successful commercial insurance productdevelopment, management, operations and/or managing multiple products andservices

Expertise in using competitive intelligenceeffectively, market research and voice of the customer to drive strategicproduct plans, including sales forecasting and execution

Experience in working directly with customers,consumers and/or broker / consultants to assess requirements and shareinsights / new developments

Strong leadership, communication and negotiationsskills

Demonstrated success meeting and driving goals /targets—experience working at or with regional leadership

Degree in business, health management or related field

Healthcare industry experience

Preferred Qualifications:

Master’s in business or health administration

5+ years leading small group or individual productstrategies and portfolios
