General Scope and SummarySAGE Therapeutics is searching for a creative, innovative, resourceful, integrative thinker to direct Research Operations. This is an important role that is responsible for strategic and operational management of Research activities within the Sage Research Organization. The successful candidate will be responsible for supporting multiple functions within research including Medicinal Chemistry, Pharmacology and DMPK, as well as working closely and collaboratively with other departments (eg: IT, Finance, and Legal). The Director, Research Operations will establish and govern a robust infrastructure supporting knowledge & data management/informatics, budgeting & contracts and vendor & alliance management to enhance the value of the Sage Discovery Research portfolio. This role will also manage the Research Operations team, driving the success of Discovery Research through a collaborative, energetic, flexible, thorough, and responsive work environment. The candidate will play a key role in day-to-day operations and long-range planning and will frequently represent Discovery Research in the existing operating model. Experience in drug discovery research, nonclinical development and operations management will be required to manage and execute the needs of our scientific teams as they endeavor to identify life-changing therapies for patients in need of new CNS medicines.Roles and Responsibilities

Manage a team of individuals who provide operational support to the Research Organization including vendor & alliance management, data entry & informatics, budgeting and contracts management

Actively participate in the development and optimization of SAGE business processes and work flows

Initiate and manage highly collaborative cross-functional relationships with Sage R&D functions (including IT, Finance, Accounting, Procurement, Legal, and Portfolio & Project Management) in support of the Discovery Research Organization

Design and implement infrastructure to support knowledge & data management/informatics, budgeting & contracts and vendor & alliance management in the Research Organization

Support execution of strategic vision including oversight of multiple activities including reporting, project planning, documentation workflow, budgeting, forecasting and risk management

Be a proactive and primary voice for monitoring and reporting of project issues, plans, budgets and resources, including risks and mitigation plans

Proactively plan with Scientific Leaders to support the execution of all Research projects and activities

Manage the development and maintenance of project infrastructure – including library/repositories of data & actions, project Gantt Charts, and Budgets. Ensure data integrity to support accurate reporting and communications

Ensure project teams/stakeholders have the tools necessary to deliver assays/contracts/decisions and any other information needed

Be accountable for good budgetary disciplines and adherence to contractual commitments

Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to develop important relationships with key stakeholders, good conflict management and negotiation skills, ability to identify issues and raise to key stakeholders in order to develop relevant and realistic plans, programs and recommendations. Demonstrated ability to translate strategy into action; excellent analytical skills and an ability to communicate complex issues in a simple way and to orchestrate plans to resolve issues and mitigate risks.Basic Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in scientific or healthcare discipline

Strong understanding of inter-dependencies between disciplines in drug discovery & development; demonstrated knowledge of several allied disciplines, such as DMPK, pharmacology, toxicology, chemistry and regulatory

Minimum of 10 years of experience within the biotech/pharmaceutical industry in a role requiring an understanding of drug discovery and development

Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to develop important relationships with key stakeholders, align relevant stakeholders to execute in a timely manner, effectively manage conflicts, negotiate conflict situations and forge consensus between competing points of view

Strong experience using MS Project, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook

Strong project management, problem-solving, decision-making and facilitation skills

Understanding of financial and legal aspects of outsourced operations, including budgeting, forecasting, invoicing, and contracts

Must be resourceful with excellent problem-solving skills; ability to analyze complex issues to develop relevant and realistic plans and recommendations; ability to orchestrate plans to resolve issues and mitigate risks

Ability to organize and manage multiple priorities required and implement structure without impacting efficiency of team

Experience using Oracle, Novatus, Sharepoint, and/or Dotmatics preferred

Robust understanding of team dynamics, with strong team leadership ability

Experience working with all levels of management and consulting with key business stakeholders. An ability to influence for greater outcomes.

Strong team player that has a customer service approach and is solution oriented.

Attention to detail and the ability to work individually, within a multi-disciplinary team, as well as with external partners and vendors.

Possesses strong written and verbal communication skills.
