In addition, the University is part of the Five Colleges (including Amherst College, Hampshire College, Mount Holyoke College, and Smith College), which adds to the intellectual energy of the region.Job SummaryThis position is responsible for the coordination and delivery of extension activities outlined in USDA-NIFA-2016-07962, which is an Integrated Pollinator Health grant, combining research and extension. This position will communicate research results from this grant to beekeepers, growers and the public, facilitate research involving beekeepers, and engage in a range of activities to serve beekeepers in Massachusetts.Essential Functions
Develops beekeeping informational materials and publications, news releases, presentations and other audio and visual aids that will be used in the dissemination and presentation of information.
Delivers workshops, seminars, and other types of presentations to various beekeeping and agricultural groups across Massachusetts.
Meets with beekeepers to assess management needs, provides relevant information to answer their questions and follows up appropriately. Helps develop creative, science-based solutions to benefit beekeepers and bee populations.
Develops, coordinates and gives presentations at beekeeper meetings and other appropriate venues on relevant current research, including work conducted in the Adler lab. Uses social media and develops web content to disseminate information.
Coordinates with beekeepers to facilitate Adler lab research goals as appropriate, potentially including citizen science projects to evaluate the efficacy of pollen supplements for managing bee health.
Understands the different needs of backyard hobbyist and commercial beekeepers in New England; provides intermediate beekeeping education for relatively new beekeepers; conducts workshops on a range of topics including managing Varroa mites, pesticide use, bee health diagnostics, native pollinators, and planting for pollinators. Coordinates Master Beekeeping workshops that will be taught by guest instructors. Makes use of the MDAR Apiary located on the UMass campus to conduct workshops and outreach events.
Works closely with the Adler lab in facilitating regular communication with other extension groups, including the UMass Fruit and Vegetable Teams and Landscape, Nursery, and Urban Forestry Program.
Other Functions
Works collaboratively and effectively to promote teamwork, diversity, equality and inclusiveness.
Works in partnership with colleagues within the CNS community and across the campus to support the Dean’s strategic priorities.
Performs other duties as assigned in support of the mission and goals of the College of Natural Sciences.
Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)
B.S. degree and at least one year of experience working with honeybees (in research, as a hobbyist or commercial beekeeper).
Ability to travel throughout Massachusetts.
Ability to make presentations and/or meet with individual producers 7 days per week and evenings as necessary.
Preferred Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)
B.S. or M.S. degree in entomology or a related life science discipline.
Physical Demands/Working Conditions
Ability to travel throughout Massachusetts.
Ability to make presentations and/or meet with individual producers 7 days per week and evenings as necessary.
Ability to conduct hive assessments at apiaries, which requires walking to some sites, and lifting and opening colonies.
