In addition, the University is part of the Five Colleges (including Amherst College, Hampshire College, Mount Holyoke College, and Smith College), which adds to the intellectual energy of the region.Job SummaryThe Director of Sport Psychology is responsible for supporting the holistic development of UMass student-athletes, and will provide the clinical services, education, resources, and opportunities that support learning essential life skills vital to student-athlete success at UMass and beyond. The Director of Sport Psychology will build rapport and relationships with student-athletes, coaches, and campus/community partners; assess and identify the challenges of student-athletes as it relates to first generation college students, socioeconomic and diverse backgrounds; support the transition to college and the University of Massachusetts environment; and organize, align and activate campus and off campus resources to meet those identified challenges. The Director will also be responsible for adhering to the philosophies and regulations of the Department, University, and NCAA as they relate to assigned duties in the Department of Athletics under the direction of the Senior Associate Athletic Director for Internal Operations with a clinical reporting line to the Director of the Center for Counseling and Psychological Health (CCPH).Essential Functions

Provide counseling services to individual student-athletes, including evaluation, treatment planning, progress monitoring, re-evaluation and possible referral.

Provide evaluations, crisis interventions, and brief psychotherapies with a wide range of patients (individuals and groups) within the athletic department.

Engage in counseling-related activities including, but not limited to, maintaining counseling records, referrals, and managing various organizational and administrative aspects of counseling cases. Provide daytime, evening, and weekend crisis intervention and emergency services in situations involving individual student-athletes or teams with support from the CCPH.

Provide consulting and outreach services to coaches, athletic trainers, and other administrative personnel regarding the psychological well-being of individual student-athletes and teams.

Manages the intersectional collaboration between CCPH and the Athletic Department to maintain departmental policies on clinical services utilizing an integrative service model.

Communicates with appropriate university administrators and various mental health and medical professionals regarding clinical services and/or patient care.

Coordinate delivery of substance use education and treatment. Assist the academic support staff, as requested with LD/ADHD assessments.

Specialized tasks as defined with Sr. Associate Athletic Director for Internal Operations.

Help athletes and teams enhance their performance and successfully manage pressures of their sport, by teaching relaxation, coping skills, imagery, positive self-talk and other techniques, providing counseling, life skills planning, rehabilitation programs and more.

Assist student-athletes with the cognitive and emotional aspects of athletic performance, conflict resolution, motivation, recovery from injury, and team building.

Participate in orientation by introducing sport psychology and how to access these services. Identify psychological education outreach needs and offer relevant programming. Provide presentations for student-athletes, coaches, and Athletic Department staff members as requested by the directors of aforementioned groups.

Understand and comply with state statutes governing the ethical provision of psychological care, as well as those rules governing the NCAA and conferences in which our teams compete. Under the direction of Athletics and CCPH, develop and execute institutional policies and procedures.

Responsible for keeping abreast of current trends and developments in the field through publications, seminars, and conferences.

Other FunctionsPerforms other duties as assigned.Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

Ph.D., Psy.D., or Ed.D. in clinical or counseling psychology or relevant field.

Eligible for licensure in Massachusetts for independent practice of psychology (psychologist and Health Service Provider) within six months of hire.

One to three years of demonstrated clinical experience.

Ability to understand and work with diverse communities and populations.

Ability to collaborate and be part of a larger system.

Ability to manage multiple and sometimes conflicting priorities.

Advanced oral and written communications skills.

Working knowledge of computers, electronic medical records software and student database systems.

Familiarity with HIPPA regulations.

Ability to develop a working knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations.

Ability to work some evenings and weekends.

Ability to foster and maintain working relationships with various athletic, University, and public constituencies.

Ability to act independently and exercise sound judgment.
