JOB SUMMARY

Reprocesses and terminally sterilizes surgical & medical instruments

and equipment.

MINIMUM EDUCATION REQUIRED:

High School Graduate or Equivalent

The Technician must be able to pass the national certification test

for sterile processing technicians, once reaching eligibility (1-2 years

of experience depending on hire date) and to maintain that certification

through successful completion of offered continuing education units.OTHER SKILLS REQUIRED

Basic knowledge of biology to understand infection control and medical

terminology relating to instrument decontamination, sterilization and

packaging procedures; the ability to identify, by name and surgical

specialty, a large variety of surgical instruments; the ability to

prioritize workload; the ability to deal positively with a variety of

customers, oftentimes in highly stressful situation; the ability to work

independently as well as in a team setting. The Technician must

recognize the professional responsibility for maintaining

instrumentation, equipment and supplies for all Operating Rooms and all

other departments served by Sterile Processing. Failure to do so can

compromise patient care, staff and physician satisfaction, and the cost

of business.

Physical Requirements

Hearing acuity is necessary to hear equipment alarms. Hearing and

speech acuity necessary to receive and interpret telephone calls. Visual

acuity and the ability to read English necessary to follow written

directions and procedures. Visual acuity and color vision necessary to

identify instruments that are color-coded and interpret chemical

sterilization indicators. The Technician must possess the degree of

total body strength and flexibility to lift trays of instruments

weighing from 30-40 lbs. Must be able to bend and reach in order to

place items and/or sets from 5" to 68" off the floor. Upper body

strength is needed to pull and push carts, tables, sterilization carts,

etc. Manual dexterity is needed to disassemble and reassemble surgical

equipment. Standing and walking comprises about 90% of the technician's

workday. 15% of the time is spent pulling and pushing. 75% of the time

is spent in repetitive motion.WORKING ENVIRONMENT

There is a high level of noise, heat and humidity due to the

decontamination process. The decontamination process requires wearing

personal protective equipment (PPE), routine contact with infectious

material and a variety of caustic detergents, cleaners, or

disinfectants, as well as steam equipment.
