Position Title: Forestry Technician (Timber Sale Prep)

Project Location: 5325 LA Highway 8, Bentley, LA 71407

Position Summary: In partnership with the Mt. Adams Institute, the Catahoula Ranger District of the Kisatchie National Forest is seeking an intern to work within the Timber program. The intern will be provided the necessary training to support presale duties including timber sale layout, timber cruising, and timber marking. The intern will work closely with a team, but will have independent responsibilities which supports the team efforts. This is primarily a field-going position and will require the intern to walk long distances in the heat and humidity of the Louisiana forests. Additionally, this position is designed to offer opportunities to experience other resource areas such as fire, recreation, silviculture and wildlife with key projects.

General Responsibilities (to include, but not limited to):

1. Selects and marks individual trees for harvest using well defined marking guidelines, silvicultural prescriptions, and specific instruction.

2. Traverses harvest units, processes information and produces maps.

3. Designates sale area and cutting unit boundaries on the ground.

4. Interprets aerial photos and locates ground features.

5. Serves as tally person and may operate electronic field data recorders.

6. Assists in the measure of limiting distances, tree diameter, tree height, estimation of defect and quality, and related fundamental timber cruising procedures.

7. Observes and reports areas of possible archeological significance and sightings of sensitive, threatened or endangered wildlife species.

8. Participates in other aspects of resource management support work such as recreation, maintenance, silviculture, tree planting, prescribed burning in a support role, etc.

9. Complete a Community Action Project that is identified by the intern, researched, and implemented during the term of service.

10. Attend and complete all MAI/AmeriCorps training and service requirements including orientation, trainings, team meetings and national service days.

11. Complete and submit all necessary MAI/AmeriCorps paperwork and reports in a timely manner.

12. Wear an MAI uniform and/or appropriate identifiers and required safety gear while performing service or attending official events.

Position Requirements:

1. Must have a valid driver's license, clean driving record and ability to provide documentation. Must comply with Driver Certification and Safety Agreement (see VetsWork Application Documents on website).

2. Attend a mandatory orientation in Dover, TN from 3/4 to 3/8 (food and lodging provided), intern trainings, and intern meetings.

3. Desire to obtain basic knowledge of timber cruising practices including: measurement techniques, defect recognition, data recording, etc.

4. Ability and willingness to work outdoors.

5. Willingness to apply herbicide.

6. Willingness to obtained Forest Service UTV Operator certification.

7. Communicate and interact in a positive, professional manner with various populations, such as project partner(s), staff, stakeholders, volunteers, youth and the general public.

8. Demonstrates independence, motivation and resourcefulness.

9. Meet other requirements of federal employee (eg. background check, defensive driving, ect.)

10. Must have served in US Armed Forces and have a DD214 with an honorable discharge.

11. 21 years of age at beginning of service term.

12. U.S. citizen, national or lawful permanent resident.

13. Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent, or commit to earning one prior to receiving an education award.

14. Ability to commit to the full 45-week term of service.
