Network Prosthetics Office. The purpose of this position is to serve
as a Prescription Eyeglass Maker for the VISN 10 Network Optical Lab
at the Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center, Indianapolis, IN. The
individual will assist day-to-day operations of the optical lab,
with a main focus on fabrication of eyeglass lenses.Learn more about this agencyResponsibilitiesThe Prescription Eyeglass Maker will be responsible for the
fabrication of eyeglass using state-of-the-art Optical Lab equipment
along with appropriate optical supplies/goods. Duties include, but
are not limited to:
Maintaining all quality control procedures set for the Network
Optical Lab Manager and/or Lab Supervisor.
Produce quality eyewear in a timely manner for patients,
employees and enhanced sharing opportunities.
Act as the liaison between the Optical Lab and other medical
centers within the VISN, as well as enhanced sharing personnel.
Provide services/production for prosthetic items within the
VISN, as well as potential negotiated agreements with the
medical centers outside the VISN.
Maintain inventory control of all materials needed in the
fabrication of lenses.
Fix, repair, and/or adjust eyewear for patients, clinics, and/or
dispensing sites.
Troubleshoot optical difficulties concern eyewear with patients,
clinics, and/or dispensing sites.
Perform preventive maintenance on all Optical Lab equipment and
tools in order them in proper operating condition.
Work Schedule: Monday through Friday 8 am- 4:30 pm

of hours a week spent in such employment.Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: This work is
physically demanding. There are long periods of standing and bending
required for the fabrication, fitting and measuring of eyeglasses.
The individual must be able to work for sustained periods of time.
Must be able to operate multiple pieces of equipment at any given
time. Excellent manual dexterity and hand, eye and foot coordination
is essential. There is some stooping, kneeling, or bending in the
normal course of duties that is required. Occasionally, there is
light to moderate lifting involved.The work environment will be performed in the VISN 10 Network
Optical Lab, with occasional duties off site and/or at another
Network facility. There may be patient contact at times, which may
require safety precautions; e.g. exposure to contagious diseases
and/or contaminated equipment.Employees are mandated to use protective gear when applicable and/or
mandated such as a mask, gloves, goggles, Z87 approved safety
glasses and shoes. Some chemicals located in the lab will be, but
not limited to acetone, alcohol and nitrogen.Other aspects of the work environment involve everyday risks or
discomforts. These require normal safety precautions typical of such
places as laboratories, maintenance shops and commercial fabrication
shops; e.g., use of safe work practices with tools and machinery,
avoidance of trips and falls, observance of fire regulations, etc.
