Farm Assistant - Irrigator

Position Summary:

This position will schedule, perform, coordinate, and oversee irrigation activities and irrigate by surface, syphon tubes and/or gated pipe and sprinkler systems, wheel lines and hand lines. Perform maintenance on pumping equipment, mainlines, wheel lines, ditches, screens, etc. Coordinate delivery of water from canal company. Keep accurate records of each irrigation. Coordinate placement and location of hand lines, mainlines, and wheel lines.

Operate farm equipment to prepare seed beds, plant, cultivate, spray, and harvest field crops in support of research related to potatoes, sugar beets, forage, dry beans, grains, corn, and other crops. Maintain farm machinery, buildings, and grounds. Assist with field days or other events for the public and stakeholders. Contribute to team effort by creating a work environment that emphasizes teamwork and safety.

Minimum Qualifications:

- Experience and demonstrated ability using sprinkler and surface irrigation systems.- Experience in: Irrigated farming and farm management techniques; equipment operation and maintenance; and crop management practices.- Experience with: Scheduling irrigation for many different crops such as potatoes, sugar beets, forage, dry beans, grains, corn, and other crops; and managing limited water supply.- Must possess: Private Applicators License or Professional Applicators License, and Chemigation License or be willing to obtain both within 6 months.

Preferred Qualifications:

- Education: Associate degree in agricultural related field.- Experience: Five years in surface and sprinkler irrigation and irrigation scheduling; three years in seed production or conditioning; coordinating and facilitating irrigation schedules to meet varying needs of research projects; operating and maintaining a variety of diesel and gasoline powered farm equipment; and operating farm implements for tillage, planting, spraying, cultivation, and harvest.- Ability: To keep complete and accurate records; flexibly work in multiple locations; perform computer record-keeping skills.- Knowledge of: Farm chemicals and their use.- Possess valid Idaho Class A Commercial Drivers License or ability/willingness to obtain one within three months.- Experience: Safe use of electrical and hand operated shop tools; welding, plumbing, carpentry, and electrical work.

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions:

- Must be able to work odd and irregular hours, including occasional weekends or holidays.

- Must be able to drive a University vehicle and pass a drivers record check.

- Ability to lift, carry and/or otherwise move material of approximately 80 pounds; perform extensive manual labor.

- Ability to work in adverse environmental conditions; work autonomously, efficiently, and safely within guidelines established by supervising personnel.
