Job Description

Position Title: Camp Teacher

Employment Status: Seasonal, Full-time

Reports to: Program Director

Salary: $11.00 - $13.00, Depending on experience level

Mandatory Training Dates: May 30th and 31st

Camp Dates: June 3rd - August 23rd

Job Summary:

The Honolulu Zoo Society's Education Department offers day Camps during the spring, summer, fall, and winter. Camps run 8:00am to 2:30pm, with optional aftercare available with pick-up times at 4:00pm and 5:30pm. Summer Zoo Camp is 12 sessions between June 3rd and August 19th. Instructors will be given lessons and will use the training days to familiarize themselves with the lessons. Two Instructors will collaborate and co-lead each Camp age group under the supervision of the Director of Education Programs.

Essential Duties:

Lead educational lessons pertaining to the natural sciences and wildlife, conduct engaging and age-appropriate Zoo tours, animal encounters, science projects, games, and other activities

Mentor teen volunteers and provide guidance when needed

Maintain good relations both within and outside the zoo community

Set up, maintain, and store program supplies

Assist in the maintenance and cleaning of educational spaces

Maintain a safe and encouraging environment for all participants and staff

Assist with aftercare for all three age groups (second shift instructors)

Any other duties assigned

Work Hours:

The shifts for Zoo Camp that we are hiring for are: First shift, 7:15 am to 3:45pm, and second shift, 9:30am to 6:00pm. Both shifts include a 30 minute unpaid lunch.

Parking:

Parking is not provided, but free parking is available at the Honolulu Shell parking lot.

Mandatory for Education Staff:

HZS requests all new hires to complete a pre-employment drug test.

Please note- HZS follows federal law regarding the use of all illegal substances, including marijuana.

Successfully complete a state and federal background check (upon hire)

TB clearance from Diamond Head Health Center

Preferred, but not required:

CPR/First Aid Certification

Education and Experience:

Highly qualified candidates will have a degree in Biology, Education or closely related discipline OR 1+ years of experience working with children can be substituted for education requirement.

Individuals in the process of obtaining a degree in one of the above mentioned disciplines will also be highly considered.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Experience leading groups of various sizes and ages, particularly children ages 4 to 10

Must be comfortable communicating with HZS staff, Zoo staff, and security via handheld radios.

Ability to learn and educate children on information about the animals and habitats at the Honolulu Zoo

Excellent public speaking skills

Dependability and promptness

Able to work independently and as a team

Strong communication skills

Ability to multitask

Must be able to lift 50 lbs.

Must be able to work in a variety of weather conditions and be able to walk for extended periods of time
