Position Summary

The Voting Rights Paralegal (Paralegal) will benefit from broad exposure to the wide variety of issues relating to the organization's policy positions and our core work. The successful candidate will play an integral role on the litigation team in helping to manage a growing litigation caseload within the Advocacy and Litigation department related to the campaign including voting rights, improving elections, redistricting and census, and money in politics, as well as urgent issues of climate change, the Equal Rights Amendment, Gun Safety, Immigration, National Popular Vote, and Healthcare.

The Voting Rights Paralegal will report to the Senior Director of Advocacy and Litigation and support a small but busy litigation team. The work will include collaborating with state affiliates, legal and non-legal staff, colleagues, courts, and legal partners across a wide range of jurisdictions and prioritizing competing deadlines and assignments in a fast-paced and highly collaborative environment. The ideal candidate will have impeccable attention to detail and the proven ability to work both as a team and independently with minimal supervision while still meeting deadlines. This position will be a one-year position through June 30, 2021, with potential renewal based on organizational needs and funding. 

Essential Functions

Tracks current litigation across multiple databases and supports communications team in drafting factually correct releases.  

Provide administrative support to litigation team in connection with ongoing litigation matters, including monitoring and tracking upcoming or pending litigation with affiliates, review of retainer agreements and complaints, and progression of legal matters.

Assist litigation team with finalization of legal documents- including tables of contents, tables of authorities, proofreading and formatting briefs, and exhibits in accordance with applicable procedural rules.

Demonstrable attention to detail and ability to create processes and systems that yield high productivity and efficiency.

Researches and monitors relevant trial, appellate and local court rules governing the form, filing, and service of briefs, motions, and other pleadings.

Drafts professional, user-friendly, court-compliant brief templates for the legal team for amicus briefs, as needed.

Cite checks and Bluebooks briefs and other legal documents

Assembles relevant materials to assist attorneys in oral presentations before the board and external audiences.

Maintains and tracks case filings, including electronic and physical files (when necessary)

Organizes the litigation work in a comprehensive database for easy finding.

Assists with other litigation and administrative tasks as required.

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills

Paralegal certificate and/or at least 2 years of experience in traditional legal environment is preferred (e.g. law firm). 

Minimum of one year of voting rights experience in either a traditional law firm, nonprofit, or volunteer work or

Ability to multitask, balance competing needs, pay attention to detail, and meet deadlines in a consistently fast-paced environment. 

Strong oral and written communication skills and excellent proofreading, editing, and blue booking skills.

Demonstrable commitment to working with and in diverse communities and promote DEI in the workplace. 

Evidence of strong organizational skills and an ability to track a high volume of jurisdictional information. 

Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills coupled with a commitment to teamwork, collaboration, and results. 

Willingness to travel, work evenings, weekends, as needed. 

High level of initiative and self-motivation and experience legal search engines and case management systems, including LexisNexis, Westlaw, and PACER.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

Paralegal certificate or at least 2 years of paralegal experience at a law firm.

Salary and Benefits

The salary range for this position is $40,000 - $50,000 commensurate with experience and the position also comes with a generous benefits package that includes 95 percent employer-sponsored health insurance, dental and vision insurance, paid holidays, vacation days, sick days, pre-tax transit benefits, and the opportunity to contribute to a 401(k) plan. This position is temporary with an option to renew based upon performance and funding. 

Location

This position is based in Washington, DC. Due to the ongoing public health crisis, currently staff will be working remotely until advised that it is safe to return to work. During this period of remote work, we are working with staff members on an individual basis to set up flex schedules if needed for childcare or other care commitments.
