Job Summary

Primary responsibility is to perform traffic control within work sites/zones for maintenance and construction projects. A flagger directs traffic for a road construction crew. Flaggers hold a large orange flag, which they use to help indicate to motorists to slow down, stop and pass through traffic/road. Flaggers often work in conjunction with other flaggers, with each standing at opposite ends of the construction area and coordinating traffic flow via communication, either by two-way radio or hand signals.

Flaggers often work long hours in a variety of weather conditions that include snow, rain, extreme heat and cold. Flaggers often stand for long shifts with few breaks. At the same time, they must remain alert to their surroundings and keep traffic moving while ensuring the safety of motorists, construction workers and themselves.

A flagger must be very attentive to what's going on around him/her. They must work well alone and as a member of a team. He/she should speak English as they need to relay traffic information to the public, other flaggers, construction workers and/or to report incidents or accidents to law enforcement officials and their superiors. Flaggers should be professional and courteous at all times.

Flaggers must be able to :

Be alert at all times

Do not stand with a group where you cannot be easily seen by approaching motorists

Always stand while flagging/directing traffic

Use proper hand signals with the STOP/SLOW paddle

Never walk the work zone without proper gear on

Do not leave your post until you are properly relieved

Have an avenue of escape if approached by an errant or non-attentive vehicle
