About the role:The Director, Advanced Technology Policy will work collaborativelyand effectively – with the company’s internal business units and externalstakeholders – to help lead the development and direction of policy initiativesrelated to key issues around future mobility and technology systems. Thisposition will be responsible for ensuring alignment between GM’s businesspriorities and public policy goals domestically as well as internationally.This position will also lead initiatives to assess and communicate potentialgovernment activities back to the business and the public policy team, developmitigation or enhancement strategies and positions, and manage externaladvocacy efforts and outreach programs, including engaging in key platforms to furthersupport GM’s industry-leading position in these issues.Keyresponsibilities include:
Leading the development and coordination of public policy positions on autonomous vehicles and evolving technology issues (e.g., cybersecurity, privacy and data)
Work with all levels of government on policies to help support GM’s business plans to advance mobility solutions and related technology to best serve our customers
Understandthe business and cultivate close working relationships within the company andits subsidiaries, and with GM’s external partners, including the development ofcoalitions, associations, and other groups aligned with GM’s strategicpriorities
Manage coalition efforts to educate key stakeholders on GM’s business model and thought leadership on innovative mobility solutions and advanced technologies
Anticipate challenges the business could face as the policy landscape evolves and proactively identify solutions in concert with internal business units and outside parties
Serve as a spokesperson for the company in policy forums and clearly articulate highly technical products and translate technology development into policy needs; educate policymakers on current and future products and services
Serve as a primary policy resource for senior company leadership on emerging technology issues and advise the business and product teams on policy implications
Lead cross-functional teams to respond to requests for comments from government agencies and regulators
Maintain up-to-date knowledge of the global competitive mobility and advanced technology landscape and monitor and research current and relevant emerging public policy issues
Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree required
Law Degree or Master’s Degree preferred
15+ years of experience in the public policy space with a focus on technology policy issues within government, think tanks, public interest groups, private company or relevant industry associations
Experience issue spotting, researching, and identifying complex policy issues and opportunities, and providing recommendations and strategy for future policy considerations
Experience and existing knowledge-base on policy issues relating to cybersecurity, data, privacy, artificial intelligence, spectrum/connectivity/internet of things, smart cities, autonomous vehicles
Experience with transportation regulatory environment and working with government stakeholderspreferred
Ability to define a path forward and work with a substantial amount of ambiguity and changing, often short, timelines
Excellent personal skills and ability to work constructively in a collaborative, fast-paced business environment
Ability to maintain the highest personal levels of ethical conduct, confidentiality, and integrity
Excellent communication skills and the ability to articulate in both a verbal and written setting
