Inmates' Legal Aid Program Attorney Job Posting

Overview

We are looking for a full time attorney to work in the Inmates' Legal Aid Program run by our law firm. The applicant will train in the New Haven office, but his/her regular office location will be in the Mystic office. Typical duties include:

Working with a high volume of clients who are incarcerated or reside in half way houses

Assisting clients with cases involving conditions of confinement issues, federal and state habeas corpus actions, claims commissioner actions, and filing of prisoner civil rights actions under 42 USC § 1983.

Researching and analyzing the law on complex issues and writing briefs

Maintaining and reporting accurate statistics for submission to the Department of Corrections

Able to handle a high volume of high maintenance clients

Manages the provision of legal advice on urgent matters after hours.

Assists with or direct supervision of program paralegals and administrative staff.

Able to work autonomously and also in team settings

Performs other duties as requested by the Program Director/Assistant Director

Skills

Demonstrated extraordinary ability to perform all aspects of functions. Excellent written and oral communication skills, including timely and effective advice to clients. Ability to independently conduct legal research and provide legal advice. Ability to work in a fast paced and challenging environment. Autonomously manages a high volume and complex workload within the scope of the program. Demonstrated excellent interpersonal, organizational, and customer services skills. Ability to handle stressful situations with a calm demeanor and be flexible. Capable of exercising good judgment and decision-making skills. Demonstrated ability to issue spot and escalate issues as identified. Demonstrates a spirit of teamwork, offering positive and constructive ideas, encouragement and support to other members of the program. Able to effectively supervise the development and oversee work product of the program's paralegal and administrative staff members.

Licensure

Current admission to the Connecticut Bar or ability to waive in or achieve bar membership in a timely fashion.
