WE are Black Hall Outfitters, CT's premiere paddle-sport destination, located on the pristine, protected waters of the Great Island NAtional Estuary, in Old Lyme CT.

We are looking for a lead counselor and support counselors for our Summer Kid's Paddle Camp program

We are Black Hall Outfitters, located in beautiful Old Lyme, CT. Our Camp program introduces kids to kayaking and Stand Up Paddle-boarding with a focus on fun, learning, and safety, getting them OFF their devices, and ON the water! Treat your child to a week they will never forget, exploring the natural wonders, meeting new friends, and learning from our trained staff on our calm, protected waters.

Each day participants and their instructors will paddle off to different destinations around the Great Island Wildlife sanctuary learning about the conservation and ecology of this pristine natural wonder, all while having fun paddling, learning new skills, and water safety. Campers will learn basic/intermediate skills and master SUP, kayaking, and tandem paddling techniques with partners. They will explore our vast estuary system, discover the natural wonders of the pristine waterways, and explore our private islands and beaches. Our instructors are trained Paddling Life-Guards that will teach campers all they need to know on our calm, protected waters FREE from busy boat traffic, and hazardous open water environments like many other camps in the area. They will be out on the water, being active, and fit, making new friends, and disconnecting from their device and experiencing active, real-life adventures.

Our Paddle Camp Counselor will plan, direct, and implement activities in Black Hall Outfitters Kid’s paddle camp program. Overseeing all events and safety, risk assessments and coordination of the waterfront paddle equipment area, while delivering lessons, guidance and coordinating activities for

the camp program to kids, ages 9-14

JOB DESCRIPTION:

PADDLE CAMP SUPERVISOR COUNSELOR

Our Paddle Camp Counselor will plan, direct, and implement activities in Black Hall Outfitters Kid’s paddle camp program. Overseeing all events and safety, risk assessments and coordination of the waterfront paddle equipment area, while delivering lessons, guidance and coordinating activities for

the camp program to kids, ages 9-14

Compensation: $15 - $18 per hour

Position Purpose:

Counselors are the primary activity coordinators for all campers. The Counselor is responsible for planning, teaching, coordinating, and carrying out activities and guiding campers in their daily/ weekly BHO paddling experience.

Essential Job Functions:

Assist in the direction, supervision, and organization of campers, within activities and throughout the day/week in order to meet the intended BHO program experience

Apply basic youth development principles in working with campers through communication, team building development, respect for safety, involvement and having FUN!

Assure campers are properly supervised at all times.

Be aware of and implement safety guidelines.

Participate in the development and implementation of program activities for campers on and off the water

Responsible for leading and assisting with the teaching, execution of daily activities.

Actively participate in all program areas as assigned.

Assist in other program areas such as nature exploration, eco-awareness, safety, and off-water activity.

Maintain high standards of health and safety in all activities for campers and staff.

Provide the daily care of each camper within your supervision including recognition of personal health needs.

Be alert to campers and staff needs and assist them with personal and/or health problems, and discuss with parents, BHO management when needed.

Be alert to equipment and facilities to ensure utilisation, proper care, and maintenance is adhered to; report repairs needed promptly to camp director.

Be a role model to campers and staff in your attitude and behavior.

Follow and uphold all safety and security rules and procedures.

Set a good example for campers and others in regard to general camp procedures and practices including sanitation, schedule, and sportsmanship, and team-work.

Responsibilities:

Teach and stimulate the interest of the campers and their overall program experience

Implement innovative and fun daily plans and teaching techniques.

Conduct a regular check of equipment for safety, cleanliness, and good repair.

Set up activity area daily.

Submit orders for supplies and equipment needs to BHO management.

Conduct an initial and end of the season inventory and store all equipment properly.

Work as a member of a team of counselors who provide guidance and support to all campers.

Plan and prepare for inclement weather events and activities, when applicable.

Physical Aspects of the Position:

Ability to communicate and work with groups participating (age and skill levels) and provide necessary instruction to campers and staff.

Ability to observe camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques.

Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity.

Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid. Must be able to assist campers in an emergency situations and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers.

Some physical requirements of a paddling position could be some bending, stooping, and stretching. Requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity to manipulate waterfront equipment and waterfront activities. Requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare, and communicate appropriate camper activities/programs and the ability to lift up to 50 lbs. Operate with daily exposure to the sun and heat and varying water conditions.
