SummaryAbout the Position: This is a permanent position as a Firefighter (Basic Life Support/Hazardous Materials Technician) GS-0081-04 Target GS-07 position with the U.S. Army Installation Management Command Directorate of Emergency Services (DES) in Fort Carson, Colorado.ResponsibilitiesAs a fully qualified Hazardous Materials Technician incumbent serves as a member of hazardous materials emergency response team using detection, identification, and monitoring equipment to identify hazardous products.Performs general maintenance and care of assigned equipment to assure a constant state of readiness.Assists the injured by applying knowledge and training during medical emergencies. Medical emergencies range in complexity from minor cuts and sprains to life threatening injuries or illnesses.Provide fire protection and prevention practices to support the storage of approximately 800,000 gallons of highly combustible fuels and some 3000 different types hazardous materials stored or in use.RequirementsConditions of EmploymentQualificationsWho May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet education and/or experience the requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Additional information about transcripts is in this document. To qualify at the GS-04 Level: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes using and maintain firefighting equipment; climbing standard and aerial ladders; and/or lifting and carrying people and equipment for rescue and salvage during fire operations. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-03). OREducation: Two years of education above the high school level in an accredited college or university in Fire Training, Fire Science, or other related fields of study. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education by 60. Add the two percentages. To qualify at the GS-05 Level: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes experience controlling and extinguishing fires, operating hose lines, making force entries, ventilating structures or performing rescue operations including administering first aid to injured victims This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04). OREducation: Four years of education above the high school level in an accredited college or university in Fire Science, Fire Training, or other related fields of study. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education by 120. Add the two percentages. To qualify at the GS-06 Level: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes operating firefighting equipment, Including pumps and heavy hand held equipment, and extinguishing agents during emergencies; experience performing emergency medical services under a variety of conditions; experience carrying out orders, effectively fighting fires, and using and maintaining assigned firefighting equipment under conditions of heavy physical exertion and extreme heat and dust in all kinds of weather. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05). To qualify at the GS-07 Level: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade; conducting rescue operations and administering emergency medical aid; and utilizing hazardous material response equipment/supplies to identify and contain hazardous products. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06). Note: Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For grade levels GS-06/07 you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone no substitution of education for experience is permitted. Certifications Required (Certificates must be attached to your application package):In addition to the experience/education described above, this position requires the incumbent to possess the following certifications. GS-04: None GS-05/GS-06/GS-07: You MUST submit a copy of the following certificates: Possess and maintain: Firefighter I/II; Airport Firefighter; HAZMAT Operations; Emergency Medical Technician - Basic; Driver Operator - Pumper; Driver Operator - Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF). Maximum Entry Age (MEA): The MEA for firefighters is 37. An employee originally hired into a covered firefighter position must be hired by the last day of the month he/she reaches 37. Maximum Re-entry Age: An employee who previously served on a covered position may be rehired past the MEA as long as he/she is able to complete 20 years of covered service by his/her mandatory retirement age. The maximum re-entry for the individual is calculated by determining the total amount of time he/she has served on a covered position and subtracting that from age 57 if a firefighter. The employee's current age is compared to the calculated maximum re-entry age to determine if he/she can be rehired into the covered position. Waivers to Maximum Entry Age: MEA may be waived, but only under specific circumstances and only if approved by the authorized entity: waivers to MEA for firefighters must be approved by the local command. Mandatory Separation: An employee who occupies a special retirement position is subject to mandatory separation when all the following minimum conditions are met: age 57; completion of 20 years of creditable service as a firefighter. Mandatory separation is effective on the last day of the month in which the minimum conditions are met. Employees who are subject to mandatory separation are given a notice period of at least 60 days.
