Essential Job FunctionsMaintains departmental records relating to subdivision and public works inspection activities, and serves as backup to other inspectors in the department. Position requires training in all areas of inspection in order to serve in the absence of, or to assist other inspectors.

Conducts field inspections of roads, curbs, gutters, and sidewalks, also; inspects other improvements within new subdivisions and new development projects as needed.

Files and releases permits. Uses computer to maintain records of permits and new County subdivision filings; logs related information appropriately.

Inspects driveway applications and advises and issues permits per criteria. Performs mathematical computations to ensure that construction projects meet appropriate plans and specifications.

Maintains daily logs on engineering inspection activities.

Maintains professional relationships with co-workers, developers, consultants, contractors and the general public at all times.

Provides support to other inspectors, planners, and engineers as requested.

Performs other duties as required.

Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent education required. Related college courses or certifications preferred.

Minimum one (1) year public works or related construction experience preferred.

Must possess strong mathematical skills with a sound understanding of algebra and geometry and the ability to perform applicable calculations.

Ability to read and understand road and bridge construction plans, terminology, and specifications.

Working knowledge of testing and inspection procedures related to the construction of new public infrastructure.

Ability to establish effective working relationships with County employees, contractors, developers, and the general public.

Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

Must have a working knowledge of computer software including Microsoft Access, Word, and Excel.

Must pass conditional post offer background investigation, motor vehicle, and drug screen.

Licenses/Certificates

Must possess and maintain a valid Colorado Driver's License.

ACI Certification highly desired.

Asphalt Inspector Certification highly desired.

Work ConditionsWork is primarily performed in the field and in an office environment. May be exposed to adverse weather conditions. Travel throughout El Paso County is required to perform on-site inspections of construction projects. May be subject to varying work schedule based on the needs of the department.
