SummaryThe program duration is oneyear. Upon successful completion of the program and at the agency's discretion, the appointee may be converted to a term or permanent position in the competitive service.ResponsibilitiesAssist with research in quantum optics: Will share responsibility for establishing and operating a new, quantum optics networking laboratory by constructing basic laboratory infrastructure as well as creating the metrology tools necessary to make quantum optics measurements. Activities will also include hardware and software development and data analysis. Selectee will manage the hazard review and chemical inventory for the laboratory as well as assist with equipment purchasing. Released or discharged from active duty within the previous two years, where the applicant is a veteran who, due to a military service obligation, was precluded from applying for a recent graduate position during any portion of the two-year eligibility period following completion of his/her degree or certificate requirements, provided that not more than six years have transpired since the applicant completed the requirements for his/her degree or certificate.Applicants must meet requirements by the closing date of this announcement.Your resume must be complete (i.e., include dates of experience, salary, work schedule, etc.), detailed and relevant to the position.QualificationsBasic Requirements:Degree: physics; or related degree that included at least 24 semester hours in physics.orCombination of education and experience courses equivalent to a major in physics totaling at least 24 semester hours, plus appropriate experience or additional education.In either A or B above, the courses must have included a fundamental course in general physics and, in addition, courses in any two of the following: electricity and magnetism, heat, light, mechanics, modern physics, and sound.IN ADDITION TO THE BASIC REQUIREMENTS,applicants must meet one of the following:1 year of graduate-level educationOROne year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-5 (ZP-I at NIST). Specialized experience is described as experience with optical measurement techniques including coherent detection, quantum tomography, beam diagnostics, laser diagnostics, noise characterization, and statistical optics. Knowledge of protocols used in traditional, coherent optical networks. Knowledge of protocols proposed for quantum networks, including continuous variable and single-photon implementations. Ability to code with, or learn to code with MATLAB, LabView, and/or Python is required. Familiarity with building materials, hardware, and basic construction and assembly methods. Familiarity with optical system design software (e.g. Zemax, Code V, OSLO) is advantageous. Experience with opto-mechanical design and machine shop fabrication is required.OR Superior Academic Achievement is based on (1) class standing, (2) grade-point average, or (3) honor society membership. 1. Class standing Applicants must be in the upper third of the graduating class in the college, university, or major subdivision, such as the College of Liberal Arts or the School of Business Administration, based on completed courses. 2. Grade-point average (G.P.A.) Applicants must have a grade-point average of: a. 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B" or better) as recorded on their official transcript, or as computed based on 4 years of education, or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; or b. 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B+" or better) based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field or the required courses in the major field completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum. Grade-point averages are to be rounded to one decimal place. For example, 2.95 will round to 3.0 and 2.94 will round to 2.9. 3. Election to membership in a national scholastic honor society Applicants can be considered eligible based on membership in one of the national scholastic honor societies listed below. These honor societies are listed by theAssociation of College Honor Societies. Agencies considering eligibility based on any society not included in the following list must ensure that the honor society meets the minimum requirements of the Association of College Honor Societies. Membership in a freshman honor society cannot be used to meet the requirements of this provision. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
