Eligible Special Selection clients should contact their Disability Counselor for assistance.DESCRIPTIONThe laboratory of Professor Surko is focused on experimental research using positrons, the antiparticles of electrons. They conduct atomic and plasma physics research. They also conduct fluid dynamics research using magnetized electron plasmas. The research requires ultra-high vacuum techniques and the use of analog and digital electronics and mechanical systems. All experiments are computer controlled. Electronics are both commercial and specially built in Professor Surko's laboratories. The group does extensive data analysis using both commercial and special software which the group writes.Under the general supervision of a project scientist and/or a post doc, the incumbent performs a variety of tasks including:i) Prepare CAD/CAM plans using SolidWorks.ii) Modelling particle trajectories in electric and magnetic fields using COMSOL.iii) Assist in the general maintenance of the labs.iv) Data analysis using various software.v) Aids in the design and fabrication of vacuum chamber components and special electronic circuits.vi) Helps with cryogenic liquid transfers (liquid helium and nitrogen), as needed.vii) Investigates new equipment and materials specifications, including obtaining price quotes, as needed.The incumbent will also be required to aid group members such as post docs, students, and the project scientist in their research, which involves plasmas in electromagnetic traps and the detection of positron annihilation gamma rays.

Must be willing to handle and be around hazardous chemicals and radioactive materials.

Must be willing and able to work with and around cryogenic liquids.

Must be willing and able to work around high voltage instruments.

Must be able to work occasional evenings or weekends as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s Degree in Physics or Engineering.

Demonstrated experience in a physics or engineering laboratory.

Proven experience in programming with tools such as Python, LabView, or MATLAB.

Experience with micro controllers and computer interfacing of electronic equipment.

Demonstrated experience constructing electronics circuits.

Proficient with modern Windows OS, with an ability to work with a variety of computer programs such as SolidWorks, COMSOL, Labview, MatLab, Mathematica, Word, Excel, and Powerpoint.

Skill and knowledge to maintain an organized lab, stocks and orders of essential supplies, and ensuring that lab equipment is running efficiently.

Effective oral and written communication skills.

Excellent interpersonal skills including tact, diplomacy, and patience in dealing with students, faculty, and staff.
