This is a full-time position in the University Center Business Office with excellent benefits including medical, dental, and vision coverage; CalPERS retirement, life insurance, voluntary pre-tax health and dependent care reimbursement accounts and vacation, holidays, and paid sick leave.

About: The University Center Business Office is located on the 3rd floor of the University Center (UC) at Humboldt State University. The primary objective of the UC Business Office is to provide the business infrastructure necessary to support the diverse programs, services, and commercial operations of the University Center. Our core functions include managing finances, human resources, information technology, risk management, and accounting. Position Summary: Under general supervision, the Payroll Technician is responsible for overall operation of payroll processes, accounts payable vouching and other Business Office support duties as needed.

Duties: The Payroll Technicians responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

Prepares semi-monthly payroll for approximately 400 employees.

Assists new employees with hiring paperwork. Coordinates hiring of large groups with departments and implementing changes as needed per law and/or company policy changes.

Creates new employee information and/or updates current employee pay rate changes, account code, benefit and W-2 information. Reports new employee to state.

Verifies hours, dollar amounts, leaves, and department coding on payroll batches.

Follows up with department supervisors on student employees working over 20 hours a week.

Coordinates employee pay advances or miscellaneous deductions.

Prepares check requests and forwards any withholding to the appropriate entity.

Assists employees with questions regarding their pay or provides their payroll information as needed including employment/ income verification for Cal Fresh, Medi-Cal and social services.

Calculates wages and deductions manually and issues emergency paychecks when necessary.

Files workers compensation claims and follows up with employees and supervisors as needed.

Assists with accounts payable batch preparation and vouching.

Performs various related duties in the Business Office.

Answers telephones as necessary, provides information, refers calls to appropriate areas, etc.

Minimum Qualifications: Education equivalent to a bachelors degree with a major in business administration, human resources or a closely related field and two years of progressively responsible payroll experience OR a combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Human resources experience preferred but not required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Strong knowledge in the general practice and methods in the areas of payroll, human resources, and accounts payable, basic accounting terms, business math, and reconciliation principles. Ability to learn and analyze accounting records, pay attention to detail, and accurately record data. Ability to learn and adhere to office procedures. Ability to meet deadlines, communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, and prioritize work duties/functions effectively in a climate characterized by heavy traffic loads, shifting priorities, and the need to balance multiple tasks. Must have positive attitude and ability to maintain cooperative working relationships with co-workers in a team-oriented environment. Possess an energy level capable of working in a high-volume, fast-paced environment for extended periods of time. Ease in dealing with a diverse population, including students and staff. Proficiency with MS Office (Excel and Word), accounting software, computer database programs, and electronic file transfers. Ability to compose routine correspondence, screen mail, telephone calls, and visitors. Ability to operationalize sustainability concepts (economy, society, environment) into all aspects of performing job duties.

Physical Requirements: Ability to sit for prolonged periods of time; strength and mobility to lift and carry items up to 20 pounds. Must have manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination; corrected hearing and vision to normal range, and clear verbal communication.
