Dental prosthetic appliances consist primarily of full- and partial-dentures, crowns, bridges, full- and partial-cast partials, and assorted orthodontia devices (splints, veneers, etc.).
APPLICATION OF JOB DESCRIPTION:
Generally, a Technician will fabricate only one type of dental prosthetic appliance (i.e., a Technician who fabricates a denture appliance does not have the knowledge or experience to fabricate a crown, bridge, or cast partial appliance, and vice versa). Furthermore, the fabrication process for each appliance differs and has many steps, and a Technician will generally have knowledge in only one or two steps in that process. This job description comprehensively covers all fabrication processes for all appliances.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Plan the appropriate setup and operation of various laboratory tools and ensure proper quantities of raw material inventory is on hand for fabrication of appliances
Read prescription forms or specifications from customers and examine dental models or impressions from customers to determine the design of the appliance to be fabricated
Scan appliance into lab management database which tracks technician’s work performed and amount of time spent fabricating each appliance
Create a model of the customer’s patient’s mouth by pouring plaster into the dental model or impression allowing plaster to set
Fabricate, alter or repair the specified appliance according to customer’s instructions on the prescription form.Fabrication processes vary based on the appliance, but include the following:
Dentures: (1) Preparing (box and pour impression material, trim models, set and seal bites and articulate; (2) Setting Up (select and setup teeth); (3) Waxing (wax dentures for try-in and/or finish; (4) Processing (invest and boil-out, pack); and (5) Finishing (finish and contour dentures, polish dentures)
Cast Partials: (1) Designing (survey and design cases, block-outs); (2) Modelling (make refractory model, invest model); (3) Waxing (wax framework, attach retention devices, carve teeth and sprue); (4) Casting and Recovery (cast metal, divest cases); and (5) Finishing (trim, rough finish and final polish)
Crowns and Bridges: (1) Preparing (box and prepare, pour, trim and set pins, set bite and articulate, cut out and trim dies); (2) Waxing (wax, seal margin, and sprue understructures, full cast); (3) Investing and Casting (invest, cast, recover, sandblast, and cut off and weigh); and (4) Finishing (finish, polish, and clean up understructures, full cast)
Porcelain Work on Appliances: (1) Metal Conditioning and Opaquing (clean up and micro-blast, de-gas, first and second opaque); (2) Building Up; (3) Contouring; (4) Glazing; and (5) Finishing (polish and cleanup)
Orthodontia: (1) Fabricating basic appliances as defined by laboratory; (2) Fabricating intermediate appliances as defined by laboratory; (3) Fabricating advanced appliances as defined by laboratory; (4) Fabricating study models; (5) Rx Bonding; (6) Fabricating Unilaterals; and (6) Other orthodontia fabrications
Test appliance for conformance to specifications and accuracy of occlusion, using articulators and micrometers
Place appliance on apparatus that mimics bite and movement of patient’s jaw to evaluate functionality of appliance
Scan appliance into lab management database upon completion of designated fabrication tasks assigned to technician and place appliance in designated area for the next step in the fabrication process
May involve contact with customer to clarify instructions not clearly identified on the prescription form or if problems arise in the fabrication process
Maintain a neat and clean workspace to prevent workplace damage and minimize potential for injury
