General Position Summary :

Under the general direction of the Cath Lab Coordinator, the Cath Lab RN is responsible for assessing, planning, implementing, evaluating and documenting nursing care of patients in accordance with hospital and Cardiac Cath Lab policies and in accordance with the standards of professional nursing practice.

The Cath Lab RN is accountable for the quality of nursing services delivered by self or others who are under his / her direction.

The Clinical Nurse utilizes specialized knowledge, judgment, and nursing skills necessary to provide care to adult and geriatric patients served in the Cardiac Cath Lab.

The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess the data reflective of the patient’s status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s requirements relative to the adult and geriatric patient.

The Cardiac Cath Lab RN provides skilled assistance to physicians in diagnostic and interventional cardiac angiographic patient care and procedures, provides skilled assistance to physicians during cardiovascular procedures and patient care, and administers medications and treatments as directed by the physicians.

The cath lab RN actively participates in CQI and exhibits compliance with Summit Healthcare core values, service standards, patient safety standards, and support of a healing environment in all aspects of the Registered Nurse’s performance.

Essential Functions / Major Responsibilities :

Assesses patient physical, psychological, social, spiritual, educational, developmental, cultural and discharge planning needs.

Reviews patient History and Physical with patient / family and assures completion of same within appropriate time frame.

Reviews available information obtained by other health care team members. Reviews diagnostics and laboratory data and reports abnormal results to the physician(s) and other appropriate caregivers.

Completes assessment and reassessment according to patient need and as outlined in policy and Standards of Care.

Formulates a plan of care, including the discharge plan, utilizing assessment data, patient, family, and health team input.

Initiates a plan of care based on patient-specific needs, assessment data and the medical plan of care. Develops realistic, measurable goals for the patient in conjunction with the patient / family.

Considers the physical, cultural, psychosocial, spiritual, age-specific and educational needs of the patient and family in the plan of care and advocates for and supports patient rights.

Collabor5ates with members of the multidisciplinary team. Reviews and revises the plan of care to reflect changing patient needs based on evaluation of the patient’s status.

Implements the plan of care through direct patient care, coordination, delegation and supervision of the activities of the healthcare team.

Provides care based on physician orders and the nursing plan of care in compliance with policies and procedures standards of care, and regulatory agency requirements.

Promotes continuity of care by accurately and completely communicating to other caregivers the status of patients for whom care is provided.

Prepares patients and the cath lab for the procedure and performs the circulator function during the procedure. Monitors and records the ECG and pressure waveforms during the procedure.

Demonstrates knowledge of normal and abnormal coronary anatomy and physiology for adult patients. Assists with care and maintenance of department equipment and supplies.

Evaluates the patient’s and family’s response to care and teaching and revises the plan of care as needed. Evaluates patient progress towards goals and expected outcomes in collaboration with other healthcare team members.

Evaluates patient’s response and the effectiveness of patient teaching.

Documents assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation in the patient record. Documentation is legible, timely and in accordance with policy Documentation reflects objective / subjective data, nursing intervention and patient’s response to treatment, to include key events occurring during the procedure and supplies used during the procedure.

Reviews and notes physician’s orders accurately and in a timely manner.

Promotes the Patient Safety Standards as a core value of the organization. Maintains clinical performance competencies appropriate to the cardiac cath lab as demonstrated through annual validations Participates in and attends internal and external education in-services for continuing / ongoing education.

Incorporates, supports, and participates in concepts of shared leadership at both the departmental and the facility level.

Utilizes evidence based practice or research within clinical practice. Actively participates in quality improvement process and actively participates in performance improvement relative to national quality indicators.

Interacts and participates in the education / orientation of hospital personnel, patients, students, families and visitors.

Promotes / supports growth of others through precepting and mentoring. Seeks opportunities for growth in the profession of nursing by means of such activities as active participation in professional nursing organizations and / or attaining advanced certification in the care of cath lab patients.

Promotes professional development within delivery of care.

Displays proper etiquette and mannerisms that reflect the SHINE Behavior Guidelines

Position Requirements

Education and / or Experience :

High School diploma or equivalent (required).

Current AZ State RN License (required).

CPR Certification (required).

Computer experience (required).

ACLS Certification (required).

2 years experience in the critical care setting, or one or more years experience in a Cardiac Cath Lab (required).
