This position is a professional advising and student support position providing academic assistance and individualized attention to promote the student s success at Prince William Sound College. This professional will understand, apply, and adhere to the National Academic Advising Association core values as they work closely with a wide range of college students. Prince William Sound College (PWSC) is a one-of-a-kind institution of higher education located in Valdez, Alaska. The main campus and its extension sites in Cordova and Glennallen are set amidst some of the country s most breathtaking scenery and rich cultural history.Duties:Academic Advising: Provide group and/or individual advising, helping students explore academic choices and assess potential fit with various degree programs. Document all advising sessions as directed. Help students define and develop realistic educational career plans through schedule planning for each semester. Monitor progress toward educational/career goals and meet at least once each semester to review the progress toward completing the proposed academic program and to discuss grades and other performance indicators. Use advising holds/PIN system to ensure mandatory academic advising. Monitor student progress and take appropriate action to promote student success including persistent, proactive communication with at-risk students. Encourage students to persist in their academic goals by addressing problems and obstacles responsibly, connecting them to appropriate campus services as needed. Comply with all federal FERPA regulations and confidentiality procedures and institutional policies applicable to testing and placement data management. Protect the security of student information and records as required, including paper and electronic media. Follow established University protocols and use assigned tools and systems, maintain ongoing communication with assigned students. Regular contact with a high degree of visibility and availability to all students including the Cordova and Copper Basin campuses is expected. Travel to the Copper Basin and/or Cordova campuses may occur once during the academic year to advise students, train employees, and/or deliver skill-building workshops.30Student Success Programming: Design and facilitate academic skill-building workshops each semester for small-group or large group delivery. Topics may include, but are not limited to, study skills, note-taking, test-taking, time management, goal-setting, reading for comprehension, career-planning, bibliographical research, stress management, healthy lifestyles, student finances, and personal adjustment issues. Assistance with coordinating outreach and local partnership efforts with an educational focus may be required.30Transition Support: Provide customized, hospitable outreach and transition support to newly admitted and first year students. Build relationships with advisees to connect them to campus resources and facilitate their development and success. Serve as an advocate and liaison for students to internal offices including faculty, Records and Registration, Administrative Services, Financial Aid, and student support services.
