Job Summary:

The Geologists II position supports the Niblack Mine on the Prince of Wales Island for POWTEC, LLC.

Geologists II perform journey professional level geology work, typically as a project team member or an assistant to a higher level Geologist, requiring the application of a working knowledge of all aspects of geologic work. Geologists II perform or participate in a variety of tasks associated with the assessment, development and management of mineral resources; identification and evaluation of geologically related hazards; geological and geophysical surveys. Positions independently or collaboratively perform work such as basic geologic mapping and field studies; geologic data interpretation; production of geologic maps and technical reports; data collection, organization, conversion and access management; or technical reviews of applications and regulatory data, permit creation, inspections and enforcement of permitted mineral development operations and exploration activities.

- The position is seasonal working 12-hour shifts, Monday-Sunday, 84 hours weekly and scheduled approximately 3-8 weeks on and typically 3 weeks off.

- The position is seasonal starting approximately in August for approximately 8 weeks with the possibility to extend further.

- Transportation to and from site is provided.

- Room and board provided on a barge at the work site during the time-on period.

- This is position requires successfully passing both a background and drug screening to qualify and will be subject to any post-accident and/or reasonable suspicion testing throughout employment.

- Must have active driver’s license.

- Must be US Citizen.

Essential Duties and Tasks:

- Compile, synthesize and interpret geologic data

- Plan and execute logistics for field operations

- Perform geologic mapping and energy resource studies

- Review, approve and inspect mining exploration and mining operations; or conduct hazard assessments

- Assist senior geologists or other natural resource specialists in all aspects of geological field and office work by participating with team members in the research and production of technical reports and digital maps; technical reviews of mining and exploration applications, and reclamation plans; identification of geological hazards, their nature and characteristics; and completion of field logistics

- Conduct geological field and/or laboratory research and prepare geologic reports, maps (geologic, mine and other) or calculations regarding specific issues

- Write technical reports that are ancillary to larger research efforts, or report and document mining and reclamation activities, issues, and recommendations pertaining to future research requirements, correction of deficiencies, or activities

- Recommend methods of analysis to use

- Review and/or coordinate the review and processing of mining applications, permit applications and reclamation plans; plan and conduct field investigations to ensure compliance with state standards and issued permits, involving location of soil stockpiles, stream bypasses, settling ponds, ground and surface water diversions, and recycle systems

- Assist operators in defining deposits, resolving water quality issues, articulating bonding requirements, and interpreting geological, geochemical and geophysical data related to mining operation and permit stipulations

- Under the guidance of senior geologists or natural resource specialists, approve reclamation of mines characterized by limited complexity and controversy, and make recommendations to correct deficiencies

- Write Findings of Fact and Decision

- Perform regulatory enforcement duties

- Navigate and conduct independent field traverses in remote areas and locate observations on topographic maps and aerial photos

- Draw geologic interpretations on appropriate maps using standard division nomenclature and symbology

- Under review, measure and describe generalized stratigraphic sections, and collect samples

- Assist project geologists in making logistical arrangements and performing project management tasks, locating vendors, completing paperwork including that required for analytical laboratory services, collecting bids for contractual field services, and preparing specific project budgets and proposals

- Determine and initiate approval of the vendor with which to enter into contractual services for sample analysis, helicopter charters, and related needs

- Ensure appropriate transportation and custody of project samples coming in from the field

- Using GIS, graphic, CAD and other software, prepare, edit, verify, organize and manage maps, graphics, data and data files, text and illustrations for publication

- Applying knowledge of numerous databases and computer programming skills, expand database design and create new project databases as required by senior geologists and projects; work with supervisor to control access to databases, especially in the field, and related restrictions, and the type of data entered into databases

- Perform the acquisition and synthesis of data in support of sectional activities

- Work with and instruct interns/graduate students in the appropriate practices of maintaining sample collections, how to enter data into project databases, and related tasks

Skills, Knowledge and Experience:

- Working knowledge of related disciplines in the fields of geology, geophysics, geochemistry, geological engineering, engineering geology, or any of their subdivisions, including mining engineering

- Familiar with all facets of geologic analysis and interpretation

- Knowledge of project organization and coordination, including the basic techniques of determining scope, schedule and budget

- Some knowledge of field geology techniques

- Analyze and synthesize a wide range of geologic data to arrive at original interpretations of geology

- Define and document issues, project objectives, strategies and deliverable products, and draft project budgets and related contracts

- Provide technical knowledge to an ongoing geoscience-related project or interrelated projects

- Effectively maintain interpersonal relationships, coordinate project activities, and function effectively as a member of a team, contributing to the positive completion of a project

- Establish and nurture effective working relationships and partnerships with federal and state agency peers, scientists, and academia peers

- Ability to use and explain the application of GIS and other software to facilitate technical tasks, such as to compile, merge, analyze and interpret geologic data

- Skill in communicating through oral presentations and written documents

Qualifications:

- A bachelor’s degree in geology, geophysics, geochemistry, geological engineering, engineering geology, or any of their subdivisions, including mining engineering

- Valid Driver’s License, required and insurable to operate company owned vehicles

- One to two years of entry professional level experience in geology, geophysics, geochemistry, geological engineering, engineering geology, or any of their subdivisions, including mining engineering

- MSHA (Mine Safety & Health Association) underground training, preferred

- Hazardous Materials training, preferred

- First Aid Level 1, preferred

- Must be able to pass pre-employment drug screen, and will be subject to any post-accident and/or reasonable suspicion testing throughout employment

- Assignments require frequent repetitive motion

- Performance of duties occasionally involves exposure to hazardous materials

Work conditions:

- Must be comfortable flying onto the island and back as this is the sole method of transportation to the job site

- Must be able to live communally where food and lodging are provided at no cost to the employee

- The noise level in the work environment is frequently loud

- Working conditions may include continuous exposure to elements such as odor, noise, dust, chemicals, temperature extremes or airborne pathogens and at greater risk of getting a minor injury such as a cut or burn while performing the duties of this position

- Work location is in a remote area with limited communication with the outside world where internet and cell phone communications are often limited

- Above ground surfaces may be icy, slippery, uneven, rocky, muddy and/or wet

- Various duties may be performed underground; underground work areas have limited lighting and wet, slippery surfaces

- The employee occasionally will be working in temperatures below 0° degrees during winter months

- Dry facility – no alcohol is permitted on the island

- No firearms are permitted on the island
