Housekeeper/Kitchen Helper - Niblack Mine, Prince of Wales Island, Alaska 99925

Job Summary:

The Housekeeper/Kitchen Helper position supports the Niblack Mine on the Prince of Wales Island for POWTEC, LLC.

The Housekeeper/Kitchen helper is responsible for day-to-day cleaning of three-story live aboard barge and assisting Head Cook with meal preparations. Barge includes offices, common rooms, dining room, kitchen, bathrooms and living quarters. Individual must be team oriented with a no job too big or too small attitude.

- The position is seasonal working 12-hour shifts, Monday-Sunday, 84 hours weekly and scheduled approximately 3-8 weeks on and typically 3 weeks off.

- The position is seasonal starting approximately in August for approximately 8 weeks with the possibility to extend further.

- Transportation to and from site is provided.

- Room and board provided on a barge at the work site during the time-on period.

- This is position requires successfully passing both a background and drug screening to qualify and will be subject to any post-accident and/or reasonable suspicion testing throughout employment.

- Must have active driver’s license.

- Must be US Citizen.

Essential Duties and Tasks:

Housekeeping

- Clean common rooms, hallways, lobbies, lounges, corridors, elevators, stairways, and other work areas daily or as need ensuring health standards are met

- Thoroughly clean living quarters at shift change including washing linens, sanitizing all hard surfaces and shampooing carpets as necessary and as directed

- Thoroughly clean/sanitize multi-stall showers and toilets on a daily basis to ensure the highest sanitary conditions

- Responsible for ensuring laundry is washed dried and stored on daily basis

- Clean rugs, carpets, upholstered furniture, and/or draperies, using vacuum cleaners and/or shampooers

- Empty wastebaskets, empty and clean ashtrays, transport trash and/or recycle and waste to disposal areas

- Sweep, scrub, wax, and/or polish floors using brooms, mops, and/or powered scrubbing and waxing machines

- Dust and polish furniture and equipment

- Responsible for stocking, maintaining and organization of storage areas

- Sort, count, and mark clean linens, and store them in linen closets

- Polish fixtures and fittings

- Replace light bulbs as needed

- Replenish supplies such as drinking glasses, linens, and bathroom items

- Wash windows, walls, ceilings, and woodwork; waxing and polishing as necessary

- Disinfect equipment and supplies, using germicides or steam-operated sterilizers

- Hang draperies, and dust window blinds

- Move and arrange furniture

- Observe precautions required to protect property, and report damage, theft, and found articles to supervisors

- Wash dishes and clean kitchen, cooking utensils, and silverware

- Perform other duties as assigned

Assistant Cook

- Assists as required in food preparation, serving food and maintaining highest health standards

- Ensures the kitchen, pantry, pots and pans are cleaned after every meal

- Washes pots, pans, dishes and utensils

- Take out kitchen and dining area garbage as needed. Replace bags

- Launder kitchen linens

- Assists cook as directed.

- May be responsible for the cook’s duties if the cook is absent

- Sweep and wash kitchen floor daily

- Perform other duties as assigned

Skills, Knowledge and Experience:

- Appropriate use of cleaning agents and equipment. In the absence of any of these skills, demonstrates the ability to be thoroughly trained to meet organizational standards.

- Ability to follow instructions and work in accordance with established procedures

- Knowledge of sanitation requirements in food preparation and storage

- Knowledge of methods of preparing, cooking and serving food

- Ability to work under direct supervision and cooperate with other staff personnel

- Ability to follow oral and written instructions

- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others

- Demonstrate ability to utilize supplies, tools and equipment properly

- Must be responsible, organized, self-motivated, and friendly

- Must be flexible, cooperative and willing to work in a team environment with staff

Qualifications:

- Valid Safe Food Handlers Card or able to obtain one

- Valid Driver’s License, required and insurable to operate company owned vehicles

- MSHA certification required prior to beginning work

- High School Diploma or equivalent

- Supports, cooperates with, and implements specific procedures and programs for: Safety, including universal precautions and safe work practices, established fire/safety/disaster plans, risk management, and security, report and/or correct unsafe working conditions, equipment repair and maintenance needs

- 2+ years prior experience in related housekeeping and/or food service positions required

- Possess basic computer skills

- Prior camp environment experience, preferred

- Must be able to pass pre-employment drug screen, and will be subject to any post-accident and/or reasonable suspicion testing throughout employment

- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus

- Duties may require the ability to discern sharp from dull and hot from cold

- The employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to 70 pounds

- Employee will stand for several hours each day

- The employee is occasionally required to sit, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl

- While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear

- Assignments require frequent repetitive motion

- Performance of duties occasionally involves exposure to hazardous materials

Work conditions:

- Must be comfortable flying onto the island and back as this is the sole method of transportation to the job site

- Must be able to live communally where food and lodging are provided at no cost to the employee

- The noise level in the work environment is frequently loud

- Working conditions may include continuous exposure to elements such as odor, noise, dust, chemicals, temperature extremes or airborne pathogens and at greater risk of getting a minor injury such as a cut or burn while performing the duties of this position

- Work location is in a remote area with limited communication with the outside world where internet and cell phone communications are often limited

- Above ground surfaces may be icy, slippery, uneven, rocky, muddy and/or wet

- Various duties may be performed underground; underground work areas have limited lighting and wet, slippery surfaces

- The employee occasionally will be working in temperatures below 0° degrees during winter months

- Dry facility – no alcohol is permitted on the island

- No firearms are permitted on the island
