Job Description This position is flexibly staffed. This position will be filled at either the I or II level, dependent on the applicant's qualifications and job experience.

What you will be doing :

Under the direction of the Division of Finance and Management Services (FMS), Section of Information Technology, Customer Service (IT / CS), the Microcomputer / Network Technician I / II position is responsible for providing technical support customer service for all State of Alaska Health and Social Services employees.

This position is responsible for troubleshooting, and resolving hardware and software IT issues, and documenting and tracking resolutions through Web Help Desk (WHD), the primary HSS IT ticketing system.

The IT / CS section of HSS works as a team with Network Services (NS), Business Applications (BA), Project Management Office (PMO), and Department Security Office (DSO) to keep the department technologically operational and secure.

HSS is one of the largest departments in the State of Alaska with more than 3,500 employees serving to assure the health and safety of all State of Alaska residents.

CS is vital to HSS in the following ways :

First line of triage and troubleshooting technical issues for HSS employees and contract partners.

Testing of new hardware, software, and system solutions to work in conjunction with more than 200 supported software applications.

Assisting with overall hardware cost savings by performing a Department wide hardware refresh annually replacing one quarter of all HSS computer assets equating to approximately 1,000 devices.

Developing and maintaining a gold standard department approved computer image for deployment along with custom software configured and packaged for specific divisions according to the work they perform.

CS is the face and voice of IT, they are the first to be contacted when there is a technical issue in any HSS division, and are often the first to know about outages, and projects.

The response from CS sets the tone for IT’s overall response and success.

The working environment you can expect :

This position is located in the beautiful northern city of Fairbanks, Alaska. The office is located on the Old Richardson Hwy in the Children’s Services office, in the building also referred to as The Teamster’s Building, The Alaska Club Building, or The Fairbanks Office Building (FOB).

The position is primarily responsible for assisting the great people working in the Office of Children’s Services with desktop IT issues, and is conveniently located on-site nearest the primary support area.

Microcomputer / Network Technician I :

High school diploma or the equivalent;

Two years experience which demonstrates routine use of two or more kinds of "off-the-shelf" application software (e.g., wordprocessing, database, spreadsheet, etc.

Additionally, applicants must show experience in basic microcomputer hardware / software support which includes installing and configuring microcomputers and / or peripherals, installing software, and performing routine file backup operations.

Substitution :

Twelve semester hours from an accredited college in software applications, office automation, computer networking, electrical engineering or computer science may be substituted for the two years experience such that one semester hour equals two (2) months work experience.

Other types of equivalent training (e.g., trade or technical school or the military) may be substituted for required work experience where the applicant provides a Certificate of Completion for courses taken and evidence of 12.

5 hours classroom experience for each semester hour (2 months) substituted.

Microcomputer / Network Technician II :

One year of experience in which the primary focus was on network installations, maintenance and trouble-shooting services for microcomputers, their peripherals and / or non-complex computer networks.

An Associate's degree from an accredited college in computer science, computer networking, electrical engineering, information systems, data communication, or a closely related field.

Professional, undergraduate, and / or military certification that includes training in computer troubleshooting, networking, network security, interconnected devices, and server installation and configuration.

Special Note : Position requires access to Criminal Justice Information and other state / federally regulated information, which includes passing one or more background investigations including fingerprinting.

Possible travel in and around the state of Alaska into rural towns, potentially in small airplanes.
