Network Engineer II (Data)

The position will provide future network design, budgeting, installation, and integration of all data platforms and systems in the entire network.

This position will provide day-to-day support, monitoring, and maintenance of the data network. Responsibilities include evaluating capacity of the switching/routed environments well as analyzing and troubleshooting network communication failures and bottlenecks. Provides high-level support for troubleshooting and fault resolution to field technicians in a cooperative manner. Liaison and coordination with outside vendors for fault resolution is also a responsibility of this position.

The position will provide routine and preventative maintenance including software/configuration backups, upgrades, documentation creation and documentation maintenance.

Principle Accountabilities

Upgrade network hardware and software components as required.

Collaborate with engineering and operations teams to design, install, and troubleshoot the switching and routed ISP network.

Collaborate with the CTO and IT consultants to plan, organize, install, and maintain the company's corporate LAN/WAN.

This position is located in Anchorage but periodic travel to the North Slope and the outer-lying villages is required.

Be on call 24/7 to provide support for after hours and weekend emergencies.

Maintain an ability to work flexible hours to meet deadlines while minimizing customer impact.

Performs all other related duties as assigned by management.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

An in depth knowledge of the OSI model and it's interaction at each layer is a

requirement with an intimate knowledge of layers 2 and 3 and operations of protocols at those levels.

Advanced knowledge of VPN protocols (Cisco IOS or JUNOS):

oIP Sec

oGRE tunnels

oVPLS

Advanced knowledge of Linux and supporting network support services including: DNS, DHCP, Netflow, SNMP, NTP

Advanced knowledge of the following networking fundamentals:

TCP/IP, UDP, MPLS, 802.1Q, 802.1ad

Advanced knowledge of OSPF, iBGP, and eBGP

Ability to document network designs and procedures in Visio and Excel.

Knowledge of telecommunications infrastructure including Wifi, PTP and PTMP microwave systems, fiber transmission, GPON, and legacy TDM transport.

Application of fundamental project management skills.

Advanced ability in reading and interpreting technical documents and forms including work orders, schematics and specification manuals.

Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality.

Ability to communicate and collaborate with customers, co-workers, vendors, and business contacts in a professional and courteous manner.

Ability to organize and prioritize multiple work assignments under time constraints, paying close attention to detail.

Ability to think analytically, be a problem solver and to work independently under stressful outage situations.

Must have valid Alaska driver's license and a good driving record in accordance with NSTC (North Slope Training Cooperative) guidelines for travel to secure areas of the oil field.

Ability to sit or stand while working with a computer for most of the day.

Ability to lift and carry up to sixty (60) pounds and transport that weight a minimum of 100 feet over rough terrain in extreme arctic conditions.

Education and Experience Required

Minimum of Five (5) years experience in network design, installation, and maintenance.

CCNP, JNCIS-SP, or equivalent training and experience
