Community Service Program Supervisor (Anchorage AK)

Alaska, Anchorage / mat-su 00000 Anchorage / mat-su USA

Vacancy caducado!

About The Company:

Rural Alaska Community Action Program, Inc. (RurAL CAP) is a private statewide 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to healthy people, sustainable communities and vibrant cultures. We are committed to improving the conditions under which low income Alaskans live, and are working towards addressing the root causes of poverty. Currently, we operate three divisions focused on homeless housing (Anchorage), Early Childhood Education (23 communities statewide), and Community Development (statewide). This position is seated within the Community Development division, our current work includes: three volunteer placement programs; training and technical assistance for youth development, substance abuse, and child advocacy; home construction and home weatherization, and; tribal court development. Non-essential staff are working from home, and you will likely work from home (90% of the time) until the pandemic is over. You can learn more about our 55 year history on our website here: www.ruralcap.org.

About The Program And Position:

Elder Mentor Program (75% effort)

The Elder Mentor Program places low income seniors (55+) in classrooms around the state to work one on one with disadvantaged children. The program benefits the seniors by providing meaningful work, the children by enhancing their school experience, and the schools by improving classroom performance and attention. In March 2020, the program had eighty active volunteers in 20+ communities statewide with about half in Anchorage and the Valley and most of the rest in remote, rural Alaskan communities. Since the beginning of the pandemic, the program for the most part has ceased service delivery for the safety of the elders. The major federal funding partner (the Corporation for National and Community Service) will allow us to complete alternative service activities but that has not yet been built out.

During the pandemic, you will work to improve efficiency and effectiveness of systems that support program delivery so that we can open stronger than when we closed. You will recruit and work with our advisory board to figure out how to improve our service delivery and meet client’s (elders, schools, teachers) needs. You will hire and supervise a subordinate coordinator to assist with development during this interim period and program delivery once the pandemic is over. You will work with that staff member to build out robust systems for training, recruitment, retention and program delivery. Where practical, you will support capable elders in a transition to a remote workspace and electronic meetings with children.

VISTA Program (25% effort)

Furthermore, RurAL CAP is an intermediary sponsor organization for the Corporation for National and Community Service’s (CNCS) Volunteers In Service To America (VISTA) program. Currently, we place between 10 and 20 national service members at external organizations around the state. Current partners include, BBNA, YKHC, Ketchikan Wellness Coalition, Covenant House, Seeds of Change, Beans Café, SWAMC, APIA, and ACLT. The VISTA Members serve one year terms at one of those organizations serving to build their capacity to render services to low income Alaskans. Typically the VISTA members are recruited from the lower 48, although about 20% are recruited locally. You will be responsible for relationship management with the hiring managers at the various organizations, as well as supporting the VISTA Leader (second year VISTA member placed at RurAL CAP) in recruiting and placing VISTA members at the organizations, as well as performance tracking and reporting. This program will be slowly transitioned to you over time, once you have your feet under you with the Elder Mentor program.

About Your Supervisor

You will be supervised by Eric Milliken who is a former AmeriCorps member and has been at RurAL CAP since 2012. He has been responsible for the VISTA program and a State and National AmeriCorps program at RurAL CAP for six years, as well as other environmental health, energy, and wellness programs over time. Eric is a UAA graduate (at 32) with a bachelor’s in business administration and economics and is working on a distance MBA. Eric believes in the power of national service to transform people’s lives and Alaskan communities. You will be one of four staff members that Eric supervises, and he very much believes in regular communication and support, and ensuring that people are set up to be successful. He enjoys working together with staff to build, grow, and improve programs.

What We Are Looking For In A Supervisor:

More than anything, we want someone who enjoys learning new things, can handle competing priorities and has a drive to be successful. This position has a strong focus on relationship management (Elders, subordinate staff, school administrators, VISTA site hiring managers, etc.), for that reason we are looking for an empath that enjoys meeting new people and having conversations with them and translating that in to decisions and action. Someone who would be comfortable having a one on one with a potential new partner and talking them through our offerings to see what is a mutual fit, and equally comfortable presenting in a conference environment.

This program has a huge amount of community exposure, this would be a great fit for someone who is to build professional relationships within the Alaska community. You must be able to have a conversation with a program manager or executive at an external organization and be able to communicate clearly and concisely what we can offer and what we need. Then, be able to switch gears and be able to effectively communicate with an elder who grew up speaking Yupik and build their skills and readiness to perform in the classroom.

Still with us? Some nice to haves (but not essential) include: program management experience, office experience, national service experience, nonprofit experience, education related to social service delivery, existing relationships with schools.

Join our team, let us work to improve educational delivery for low income students in Alaska!
